This app on my phone means I no longer need to carry maps for low risk walks.

Needs a lot of work

If you’re using this in the UK, don’t. OS is by far the better option, which provides native mapping in an easily accessible way. However, if you’re using this in Europe, it’s the most comprehensive solution I’ve found, providing you use a paid option. This is because OA allows you to download country-specific mapping tiles, and plan and share routes. That said it’s ridiculously complicated to build and share routes. If OA just tried to be a good mapping tool, it would be fine. Instead it tries to be an online guide book, which makes it far too complex to use. FATMAP was a lot better, to be honest, but since Strava murdered it, OA is the least worst option.

I see the devs have been working hard, well done. The app and website have improved greatly since my last 2 star review. Great work.

Awesome application!

I’ve been genuinely confused by some of the reviews I’ve read on here; not that I think the people who wrote them are wrong, I just think they’re comparing apples and pears when looking back at previous apps and being unhappy that some features might be different or missing. I used to use Strava to map my walks and Komoot to plan them. Outdoor Active is tailored to hiking, biking and the great outdoors so I find the information and data points used are perfect for those activities. It appears to be accurate, is easy to use, and the fact that the maps used to plan my walks are aware of all the footpaths and so on is a huge help! On other apps you have to create 200 waypoints to keep the route honest, OA is far more efficient and will automatically choose the most direct route utilising paths that are relevant to the activity you’re doing - i.e. footpaths for walking, bridle ways for cycling, etc. Other highlights are “As-The-Crow-Flies” which allows you to override the auto-routing by choosing a straight line if needed (handy when crossing a gate or boundary), and also reversing your route, importing a gpx, and even highlighting on the route where your photos were taken! It’s ace, and at £27/year, it’s a fair price too!

The app could do with more 4x4 Green lane's

App a step up from a paper map

Atomiriades on

Quickly bought the Pro subscription - this feels like an app built with care that's here to stay. Like the ease of downloading and use of large area maps. The built-in screen scale is a must that other apps don't have. Nice that Open Street Map is a possible layer, with its up-to-date user-input path routing. So this app is my go-to for hiking, cycling (and good for urban use - recently Hamburg)- plus motoring. As a long-time skier, potentially the snow data could illuminate choices for the day, but depth etc coverage in France (for example) is (currently) limited. The 'you-are-here' spot has a directional 'flare' that could be clearer on a bright day. Overall the app is great - now the backup paper map goes into the pack with Outdooractive immediately accessible in the brest pocket.

Brilliant App

Now you have to pay to use the satellite layer which you didn’t used to have to. Not impressed.
