Apple watch 3 and under no longer supported
I like the app however is a bit heavy on the phone battery and tends to make phone overheat which dims screen making it difficult to see when cycling long distances with screen on. Always had voice and watch to help navigate with screen off. My series 3 watch app has now also disappeared after a recent update as now needs Apple Watch OS 10 which is only available in series 4 and above watches. I will either have to buy new watch / phone or cancel subscription.
Better than it used to be
I was a Viewranger user and loved it - I just could not get to grips with this app; the interface was not intuitive and everything was such hard work. I kept it on my phone only because that was the only way to access the OS maps I had paid for with Viewranger. Recently started hiking again again and I’ve been surprised how easy this has been to use. I have created plans, turned them into routes and navigated along them to create tracks. One thing I’ve loved which is actually BETTER than Viewranger is how the app knows to plan a route along the available walking paths. ViewRanger could only deal with straight lines so you had to place a point at every single little turn in the path and make sure you got every point exactly in the right place. This will just follow the path in between 2 points so it is much faster and more accurate. Today I was camping with no phone signal and was able to follow my route on the map even offline. Offline it doesn’t know you are following the route and doesn’t tell you if you go off it, but at least you can see it and just pay attention to keep following it. Taking off one star because every single time I open the app I have to close the page asking if I want to upgrade to Pro and it’s annoying.
Serious potential but expensive
April 2024 This is a very comprehensive app with lots of map types and has too much to review properly here. However, I would like to highlight a couple of issues that have prevented me from going past the trial period. 1. The direction indicator attached to the location marker is too small to see (I’m over 60 and need to use reading glasses for small/feint things) On a cold hillside in the Lakes having to remove outer gloves to get to my glasses was an issue, even then I could barely see it! My wife who wears glasses had the opposite issue, having to remove her outer glove to shift her glasses to see. Please use something like OS maps red arrow head or a blue fan like most other apps to show direction. I know you can double press the location arrow to to make the map move to sight your route but that leads me to my second point. 2 as it was very cold I was using liner gloves with touch screen patches, as the location arrow is in the corner next to the menu at the bottom I kept catching the menu and changing the page, so frustrating! Then having to remove my glove in serious wind chill to change it back was not pleasant. As my review is titled great potential but fundamental issues need to be addressed.
Update May 2024- Still awaiting more viewable direction indicator and location indicator position change. Subscription paid and hopeful!
June - as above 😐
Great app
Great app for walking, cycling and off road
Good app with lots of features
Appears to track accurately and good set of maps.
Best outdoor app
I have used many apps for a number of outdoor activities, but find this one the best.
The most comprehensive navigation tool!
Outdooractive has the biggest collection of topographic maps and the best route planning tools.
Good but lacking print capacity
Overall this app works pretty well. Planning routes and generally using the maps is easy and efficient.
The major drawback is the inability to print topo maps like the OSGB maps. I was used to this feature in the OS app and miss it. Can OA fix this?
Great app
Very useful. My default go to these days for mapping.
Not as good as practical as ViewRanger
I loved Viewranger and and how easy it was to use while driving. I purchased the whole of uk maps with I can still use (once I’ve re logged on and chosen ‘my maps’ and got passed the subscription… ) but without the directional line showing the direction you are travelling it’s become useless for me. Great if you are walking or on your electric bike 🙄 but now not practical to use.
Back to Memory map for me.
I’ve enquired about if or when the direction line will be added back but know one seems to know!
So for now it just sits on my phone unopened..
Seems all about subscriptions now !
