I love the minimalism. 

I love that the default settings work perfectly out of the box.

I love the no-nonsense UX where 90% of what I want is on a single page. 

 I love the way voice boost and silence trim “just work” and work so well, that you forget they’re active. 

 As for the down-sides of Overcast…. 

 It falls down in the ability to discover new podcasts. The “recommended for you” section is abysmal and US-centric. It’s difficult if not impossible to find new podcasts. 

 In a similar vein, the search feature is very limited and seems constrained to podcast hosts. So you want to find other podcasts that your favourite guest has appeared in?Good luck with that.

 I know there’s a re-write of the app in the works. I hope it adds new features and doesn’t just mimic the current functionality. I’m a premium subscriber for the last 6 years but I’m finding it increasingly difficult to justify staying with this app.

 [Updated Sept 2024] The new rewritten version had a fairly messy initial rollout, with numerous bugs and missing features. However, over the last few releases, it has re-established its precious stability and new features are being added again. Still waiting for an improved podcast discovery feature.

I've been using the new version of the app (a complete rewrite of the app) extensively and it is, as ever, excellent from a podcast listening experience with features that make podcasts an actively better experience. 

The new design of course requires an adjustment in behaviour, and there have been bugs and regressions in some features. That being said, the new foundation is clearly allowing the developer to rapidly address concerns (3 updates within the space of two weeks) and I have every confidence they will iron out these issues.

To make matters worse the option to export my subscriptions as an opml file so I can switch to a better app has been removed.
