What We Liked: It’s so common to find app-books that include a few great features for early readers to increase their confidence, but rarely have I seen so many come together in one place. The read-along feature, the choice of cursive or manuscript, the vocabulary building features, it is all incredibly wonderful, and the graphics and interactivity are equally delightful. I have a weak spot for apps that encourage cursive, if your child isn’t confident in reading cursive you can use the narrated option with the cursive text turned on with the word-by-word highlighting and have them read along to build their skills. Having the individual words read when they are tapped is a huge boon, I wish more apps included this feature. Of course, you get all of these features in FOUR languages as well, so language learners can tap individual words to hear them properly pronounced and pick up new vocabulary with the Show Me option. Apps like these are so useful for learning languages through immersion, the way young children naturally learn their mother tongue. Oh yes, my children! My 8-year-old was completely drawn into the app and read through it in one sitting. The story IS very abbreviated for the picture book length, so she missed some of the details and headed off for a longer abridgment that we own after she finished this app. Isn’t that what we want to see? Children being drawn into the story and wanting more of the meat once they establish a familiarity with classic stories, it’s exciting to see. My little girls had a bit of a tricky time with the many features of the iPad version. They dug in without mom helping them start it and couldn’t find the narration feature and STILL had a great time with the fairy dust etc. Now that I’ve shown them how to get the narration, they are very pleased. We have several of So Ouat’s apps and while I’ve always been intrigued by their literacy features, some of them have been difficult to smoothly implement. This new release of theirs shows that they have made leaps and bounds in integrating these rich features directly into the text, and I love it! If you’ve checked out their previous apps, now is definitely the time to give them another try, the quality of The Adventures of Peter Pan is astounding, everything is new and improved! I really hope they will consider building their existing books into this new platform – it is truly incredible. What We Didn’t Like: The page navigator is a bit tricky to use as
