Pleco is the ultimate Chinese learning companion: an integrated dictionary / document reader / flashcard system with fullscreen handwriting input and live OCR, from a company that's been making the world's best mobile Chinese learning apps since 2001.

We offer two free built-in dictionaries: the popular open-source CC-CEDICT, with over 110,000 frequently-updated entries, and our own PLC dictionary, with 125,000 entries, parts of speech, and over 25,000 example sentences (with Pinyin). More than two dozen other dictionaries are available as free and paid ($) add-ons, including licensed titles from well-known publishers like Oxford, Longman, FLTRP, Tuttle, SLPH, and Commercial Press.

• Powerful merged search: look up words by Chinese characters, Pinyin (spaces / tones optional), or English, with support for wildcards and full-text search. And no need to tediously flip between all of those dictionaries to find a word - just type in your search term and instantly get a combined, frequency-sorted result list.

• Links and cross-references: easily look up character components, break down words into individual characters, look up lists of words containing a particular character, and search across all dictionaries for example sentences containing a word.

• Gorgeous typography: see it for yourself in our screenshots - we think we're one of the best-looking Chinese dictionaries around. Alternate Kai/Song/Xing-style Chinese fonts are also available ($).

• PRC/HK/Taiwan-friendly: every part of Pleco supports both traditional and simplified, headword readings can be shown in Pinyin and Zhuyin, and some dictionaries even support Cantonese. (note: stroke order diagrams do support traditional characters, but use PRC order)

• Audio: Hear Mandarin and Cantonese for words and example sentences using iOS' free built-in text-to-speech system. We also offer add-ons ($) with native-speaker Mandarin recordings and higher-quality Mandarin TTS.

This app is the de facto standard for anything Chinese dictionary related. A wealth of dictionaries, from (free) basic dictionaries to (paid) professional generic and topical dictionaries; very convenient reader functionality to read the clipboard, documents or the web with immediate character dictionary  lookup; optical character recognition; very sophisticated flash card system.. couldn't recommend it more strongly. Simply put the best app for Chinese that's available. Consistent updates making it more and more user friendly with so many features that are so useful. I love the reader, the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and the speech to text. A must have app for anyone learning Chinese. The online forum is great also. The founder of the software will reply 99 times out of 100 within a day or 2 to most questions.

### ***** "Great App for helping with Chinese studies or general translation"
This is a great App for helping with Chinese studies but you'll need to download some of the additional content, like Full Handwriting and Full Flashcards, to get full use out of it for studying purposes. For general translation it is also great as it works offline which is good when you're in an area without signal and other apps are web based. I'm currently in China and use this app all day everyday, often solely using this app when studying. Most translations are completely comprehensive covering the vast meanings behind each character and offering up sample sentences. There are the odd few words that will have less in depth translation but all in all you will find it hard to get a better translator and study aid.

It gets 10/10 for usability. I use this app every day, and the add-ons are worth every cent. If you're learning Mandarin, you really should get this. Highly recommended.

When your entire class is buying smartphones (as we did back in the day) just to get Pleco, you know you've got yourself an incredible app.

Someone suggested that tou need to spend 200, this is not true. The free dictionary in it is very good, better than oxford one. You need to buy some plugins, Handwriting one is a must, also turtle dictionary is good to have. Oxford one no use.
