Description

Get this app, if you are passionate about your child learning to read, and your child is getting ready to start school, in reception or year 1, or older but struggling with reading.

It teaches phonics with the voice of an English reception teacher, and handwriting (including joined up) just like your local school. It has a first set of storybooks for them to read - like Biff and Chip, but written specifically for children learning to read using the synthetic phonics method of teaching reading as outlined in the national curriculum.

Your child will prefer them to paper books, because they can tap a word to get help sounding it out. You will prefer them, because the quizzes check they can read the words and understand them. The books get progressively harder, but kids don’t realise because they are getting better at reading all the time.

If your child is new to phonics, they’ll begin by being taught the first group of letter sounds, the sounds they make and how to write them. Once they’ve mastered them, they’ll tackle their first set of simple storybooks that just use those letter sounds.

If your child can already read some simple storybooks, then the app will assess what level storybooks to start them on in the app. Once they have mastered those books, it will teach them the next set of letter sounds they need to know.

Our apps are used in hundreds of UK primary schools.

PocketPhonics Stories won 2015 Best Learning Apps & Games award from Balefire Labs. Out of the 5000 education apps they reviewed, it's one of only nine apps they rated A+. It's also an Academic Choices Award Winner.

Parents and teachers can easily monitor children’s progress online. They can see what stage the child is currently at, any letter sounds they are having difficulty with and what storybooks have been read. Teachers and parents are emailed a certificate when a child completes a learning task.

Specifically, children master the following skills:

* writing letters (wide range of writing styles plus cursive options, so they can learn to form letters the same way as at school)
* recognising 72 letter sounds (e.g. ‘ch’ are the letters that make the initial sound in ‘chat’)
* blending letter sounds together to make words (e.g ‘ch-a-t’)
* hearing a word and selecting its written form (e.g. the app says, “chat”, the child has to select ‘chat’ from a group of words - some of which are similar to chat)

At home, they can easily switch from using the app on your iPhone to an iPad. At school, teachers can give them any iPad, and they’ll be able to continue from where they left off.

It’s working!

csjeweller on

My daughter doesn’t mind practicing reading and writing when it’s on my phone. She does it quite thoroughly and I’ve seen improvements.

Great app

Daughter enjoys it and the voice speaks clearly with an English accent.

Fantastic app

My 4 year old has been using the app for 2 months and is now reading very well. The exercises and books are a good length for working through a little each day. He always wants to go back and has fun taking the quizzes at the end of each book.

Thanks

Doesn’t even load

Scooby-Doo15 on

I have purchased this product. It does not even load past the initial screen. Have contacted customer support multiple times and multiple responses have still not sorted the issue. To be honest they rested me as if I was an idiot with the first two replies suggesting I switch the device on and off and that I redownload. Like I hadn’t tried both those already. Not happy I paid the most I’ve paid for a phonics app and it doesn’t even work. Don’t waste your money.

PocketPhonics Stories

I highly recommend this app. My child enjoys using it and the app is very easy to use and engaging. I particularly like that you can choose an English voice or American voice for the pronunciation. You are able to personalise the style of the text and choose between upper and lowercase letters. My child finds it motivating when they receive a certificate or feedback from the program. When I had any difficulties/problem or didn’t understand something, the customer support was excellent. The developer was quick to respond. I also purchased Pocket Phonics and Dot to Dot letters and numbers. These compliment the PocketPhonic Stories App.

Without question the leading resource that helped my girls learn to read

Jedegaah on

The developer has always replied with hours to the few suggestions/issues that I have made. The display is clean and interesting enough to hold my LOs attention. The sections that develop writing are invaluable in guiding the correct way to form each letter. They love getting their certificates for each level passed... And I love showing them off! I do everything that I can to recommend this all to all who will listen

Fantastic

Daughter is learning while playing

Aaarrrggh on

My daughter loves this app. She thinks it’s a game just like any other - it may as well be a car racing game as far as she is concerned, but all the while she’s learning about letters. She’s able to recognise every letter of the alphabet and make the sound + write them out already at 3 years of age, and I’m sure playing with this app has helped her. Worth it.

Makes learning fun.

Great app, our granddaughter is entranced.
