Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.
Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.
Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.
Proton Mail in the press:
“Proton Mail is a Gmail-like email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes
“A new email service being developed by a group who met at MIT and CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

Much more security than Gmail and Outlook. I haven’t gotten 1 spam email and the only I get sometimes is legit companies such as Amazon that I had contacted through chat and for some reason the email they send to me isn’t 100% safe so it goes to spam folder. Ability to enter a pin password before opening up your email through the app on your phone is a very nice extra benefit.
You get 500gb for free and do a couple steps super quick and easy and they up it to 1gb of free space. I deleted all of my gmail accounts and outlook and will never use them again as long as Proton exists and stays secure :).
Excellent excellent email service and company overall
but their phone app is a little clunky when it comes to actually composing a message.
Weird zoom ratios or text reflow issues that put text off of the screen requiring you to do a lot of manual scrolling are fairly common when you're composing a message that's in reply to a thread. The cursor does weird things too like placing typed text at the tail end of the message no matter where you've placed the cursor. It's even worse when you use their mobile website, pretty much a constant on both apple and android. Been like this for years, it really hurts usability and causes a lot of unnecessary typos
Great except one thing
Everytime Proton adds a new feature, they like to advertise it upon login. This time around it's about easily RSVPing to events. Problem is your shown this every time you login to the app. This is a problem for users like me who have multiple accounts so I'm logging in and out. It's simply annoying.
Why
If you feel that you need to charge for folders and labels please consider creating a separate paywall option at a lower price point. Charging $60 yearly baseline for the ability to organize emails is steep. The four folder + three label restriction for the free version isn’t useful. I don’t need 10 addresses or 25 calendars. I doubt many do. Is it that costly for you to provide us the ability to sort and organize? I love proton. I loved it more when there were typical options that basically every other mail app has.
Probably the best email app now
As of this writing (June 2024) this app has grown over time into one of the best email apps available. It doesn’t try to cram ads into your emails, it has strong privacy features, powerful sorting / filtering options, and a good UI.
The Proton apps team has been improving all of their apps at a crazy pace over the last 2-3 years, and I highly recommend trying their apps and services.
Great app but…
It is a great app don’t get me wrong, but i feel like it should have the same themes on the app that it has on the web, and please we got nearly every major language but Arabic, please add Arabic language, thank you.
Great mail service
I love Proton Mail. Thank you Proton Mail creators for making this easy straightforward and secure mail service.
Only 2 email accounts can be added for free
This need to be free, 1* until you change your mind.
Apple App Store or Proton
I was late to pay my monthly mail plus on apple App Store so it says to pay on proton home site which I paid my monthly subscription to discover my mail is not there and proton replied back and says apple I did not pay? Apple redirected my to Proton! All my Insurance verification can’t work my rent can’t be paid I need what I paid for to get my storage! I also have 48 app updates which are free apps they blocked me on them all Wow What’s with these changes that don’t benefit customer
RESETS EVERYTHING ON CACHE CLEAR
This is a great app… BUT a HUGE problem is that EVERY TIME I clear the in-app cache, the ENTIRETY of my folder system is reset and EVERYTHING is moved back to the main inbox! This happens on both of my iPhones, both the X & the 15 Pro.. (I haven’t yet installed the Mail app on my android devices yet, so I don’t know if the same thing happens with those, but at least, on the android devices I can clear the cache from the device settings, so I’m not as concerned about those at the moment). I even tried moving emails to the Folders I want them in on the website and then clearing the in-app cache, but got the same result… everything was reset back to the main inbox. This makes no sense whatsoever to have a feature that clears the cache, and also resets everything back to the main inbox. I love being able to clear cash inside abs because Apple stores EVERY morsel of cash within an app’s data file, making it impossible to clean up space by offloading an app & reinstalling it (unless you completely delete everything including the data regularly, which is time consuming and annoying). But having everything reset within an app is just insane, especially when you’ve worked so hard to filter many HUNDREDS of emails into separate folders and suddenly discover you have to do it all again.
