The action, the boss, the characters, all of this game is amazing! I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve died mashing a button on the left side of the screen that didn’t exist because my thumb was landing in the dead zone of the island without me even noticing. I really, *really* appreciate the developer going out of the way to support landscape and portrait gameplay, as well as zooming the play screen to get around this issue, but none of it fully compensates for the hardware. I was able to 100% it on Hard, but found certain elements added to the difficulty in a way that felt more frustrating than fun. Enemy attacks, and your own, are divided into hi/mid/low lanes, but it’s offset such that you have to respond to high attacks with low hits, mid attacks with high hits, and low attacks with mid hits. This is a fair design decision, but it takes getting used to and adds to the difficulty curve. It slows reaction time and if I’m not 100% focused I often die trying to mid attack something thrown at me in the middle lane, or punch something coming in the high lane. This is exacerbated by the clunky touch controls. The attack buttons are small and close enough to make misclicks common even when I do remember the right option. The buttons are locked to the camera such that trying to make the low and mid attacks large enough to not misclick ends up squishing the game to half the screen. Conversely, trying to get a nice side-on angle to more clearly distinguish the different lanes, makes the mid attack button unusably small. Portrait mode makes the game too small for my eyes. Swipe controls, (e.g. tap for punch, side swipe for kick, and down swipe to duck) would be clear and intuitive, especially since I couldn’t find any reason to disable auto-run in any level but the boss. At least letting us adjust the attack zones independently from the camera would go a long way. I almost think it’d feel more natural if I could move the “duck” button to the top zone. Overall I’m glad I picked this game up and felt accomplished beating each level.
