### ***-- "Disingenuous update re Apple Pencil"
Yes, you can finally use an Apple Pencil to highlight. But it’s nothing like you’d expect. You can’t highlight PDFs unless you’re in “text” view. Ok, annoying, but maybe not the end of the world. Until you switch back to pdf view. Then you can’t see your highlights anymore. Forget about something basic like handwriting notes. Not available. I realize this is a reader app not a pdf app. But if you want to claim your app supports Apple Pencil then support it. I really want to like this app more but there are just SO many seemingly needless friction points. I’ve signed up for one more year in the naive belief that when they say more support for iPad is on the way that it really is. We shall see

### *---- "Buggy and poor UX for reading"
Got this because I already use readwise highlights and wanted to sync e-books and reading states across devices to my android e-reader. I don’t enjoy reading with it. I would cancel if it weren’t part of the highlights subscription which I value more.

- Buggy: highlighting a word doesn’t always bring up the menu to allow highlighting. Often it mis-registers a page turn. Lots and lots of effort just to get a word definition or add a highlight. Then,
- No offline/real dictionary: makes it completely unusable for difficult reads on planes and commutes so on… requires like 3 taps and 3-5 seconds of loading to get a watered-down chat-GPT definition as a highlight as opposed to a comprehensive dictionary definition. Infuriating with spotty connection, impossible with no connection.
- Strange gesture controls for ebooks: No swiping left or right to change the page so all those years of muscle memory of reading real books and using a e-reader or any other reading app are really haunting me. Don’t understand why this seems not to be adjustable in the settings when other gesture controls are.

Edit: further frustrations:

- Can’t bookmark a page/location (I suppose you could do this with a Note or highlight but that makes no sense). Sometimes I want to return to a previous chapter or some other place in a book for reference but then I lose my current place.
- No long-term saved/automatic location/progress markers. There’s a small dismissible notification which allows you to return to where you were if you jump around but once it’s gone, it’s gone. I live in fear of accidentally clicking this thing on a thousand page book I’m reading and losing where I was (it’s happened a couple times). I believe the Kindle app has this figured out, with multiple-device location.
- More of a feature request: No document prioritization feature. Sometimes I just drop a bunch of things in to read later with some idea of which ones I’d like to read first. But you can’t reorder the documents in the home feed, nor can you add some sort of color or flag to mark which ones are higher priority or more important.

I got this to be a good place to read all my favorite publications in one app. Unfortunately, it has been my experience that I’m unable to read any of these publications, such as the Economist, New Yorker, or History Today, in the Reader App. Whenever I try to import them, I only get the first paragraph, presumably because when Reader goes to grab the article, it does not have my credentials to access the articles behind paywalls. 

If I can get support to help me find a way to use Reader for my needs, I’d be happy to change this review. But until then, this app is disappointing and useless for me.

This app works well for collecting and managing the digital content I consume.

07/08/25: iPhone share to Reader issues resolved. Further enhancements I would like are [1] account merge, or [2] an export in a format that can be imported (as is) to another account. [3] Separate Tag and Notes buttons.

In general, I’m most interested in having the ability to review what I have read/watched/listened to over periods of time (such as in the month or over the year); the ability to associate notes with that content for future reference; and the ability to curate a collection for different purposes - such as in identifying resources for a presentation.

02/07/25: iPhone share to Reader issues persist.
I was using this app to collect mostly podcasts and youtube but several months ago the “share” feature stopped creating entries in my account. Did not matter what app I used (safari, pocket-cast, youtube, etc). If I want to create an entry now, I have to copy the link and paste it into reader. I have been hoping the issue would get resolved but so far no luck.

I love this app. It basically combined my separate RSS and “read later” apps into a single amazing reading hub, and I am only scratching the surface of its functionality. But good god the app icon is ugly — please change it so more people can find out what an amazing piece of software this is!

### ***** "I love it 90% of the time"
I love the app,  BUT: you can't search within a filtered view, and you also can't tell in the search results which results are from the in box and which have been archived. They're all displayed as a uniform blob. Also can't set up a filtered view using the name of the feed if the feed no longer shows up in the "add a new feed" search, even if you have hundreds of saved articles from back when that feed existed. I hope they address this soon.

This app is fantastic except when it glitches, which is unfortunately a pretty regular occurrence. I have to delete and reinstall several times a year, and every time I do, it’s a massive pain to sign in because my account is not connected to Apple or Amazon. I would love to see this app making signing in via email easier.

Title says it all. I am I school and it completely changed how I research. I was tired of social media apps trying to pull me away from my work. I started deleting them, but couldn’t fully disconnect. The feed in this app completely replaces any social media app i had before, all ad free. This app is truly a game changer. Highly recommend.

The main idea is good but the app has several bugs which you encounter on a daily basis. And there isnt any way to report them easily in the app. Thats not fine with a paid app. I might cancel my subscription in the near future.

I just wanted to write and say how much I truly love this app. The ability to tag, search, and review those nuggets of value I find in reading has made my reading so much more valuable and useful.  And the new ‘Chat with your Highlights’ feature is about the best use of AI in my life. The opportunity to ask a question about something and have the AI summarize and organize content from my own sources (and only my own trusted sources) is incredible useful. In combination with Reader, this is absolutely among the best apps I have ever owned.
