Alles wat wij denken, voelen en doen wordt gestuurd door ons onderbewuste. Het onderbewuste klinkt voor veel mensen als iets vaags en ongrijpbaars. Het is nog niet zo makkelijk om het onderbewuste te omschrijven. Je kunt het zien als een soort onzichtbare kracht in jezelf, een supercomputer in jou, die alles wat je meemaakt, voelt, ruikt, proeft en ervaart in programmaatjes vastlegt en opslaat. Ook al je lichamelijke processen, zoals je hartslag, ademhaling en bewegingen worden aangestuurd door het onderbewuste, zodat je er niet bewust over hoeft na te denken om te kunnen blijven functioneren. Het onderbewuste wordt vooral in onze kindertijd geprogrammeerd. Dat komt omdat kinderen vanaf hun geboorte relatief snel alles moeten leren.
