Best money spent on the Island
The driving tour takes all the questioning of where to go and how to get there. We found the stories and advice wonderful and entertaining. If you are going to drive someplace, pick up the tour. You can’t go wrong.

This was our eighth trip to Kauai and fifth trip to Maui (and several times to other Hawaiian islands), we had used their guidebooks many times (The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook, and Maui Revealed The Ultimate Guidebook), and we had the latest version of both guidebooks. So we thought that we knew Kauai very well and wondered if the app would be worth it. Yes, it was worth it. Kauai and Maui have changed a lot since the last time we were there, especially due to COVID-19 and the Lahaina conflagration. A lot of the information in the app is in the guidebook, but additional information is in the app. The restaurant reviews provide additional information that is not in the guidebook, links to websites, and the ability to filter restaurants by various criteria. And updates are posted in the app as soon as something changes. We are glad that we bought this app.
Loved this resource in years past and am returning to Maui again, so really believed I needed something up-to-the-minute updated as the island recovers from the tragic fires. Spent the $17.99 to renew. Now find to get to much of the content I need to upgrade for another $29.99 a year. I’m kind of furious at this bait and switch. Revealed is far from revealing, and never getting my money again!
I can’t say enough good stuff about the app and book. We found a cave and a waterfall on the road to Hana. They were right off the road, and we didn’t start until noon. So, those spots off the road were crucial time saver. Dunno how this thing gets reviewed with less than 5 stars!
I love the Revealed guide book and having it on an app is so helpful when on Island! 5 stars for helpful and useful information. Couple issues with the app- 1- kept logging me out. There were days when I had to log in multiple times which is highly inconvenient 2- need a better way to sort and filter information based on location and even some kind of a rating system. (Example would be Na Pali coast boat tours) This felt natural in the books but almost impossible to figure out in the app.
The driving app was great! Directions were often more detailed and accurate than using iPhone/siri navigation. I also definitely appreciated the suggestions and call outs to interesting sites, this allowed us to shift our plans quickly. This came is especially useful when we decided that the unimproved road to polihale beach seemed a bit too rough for rental car (thanks for the warning) and we quickly decided to switch gears and head toward Waimea canyon. We often decided to stop at sites that were on our way to or from a particular destination, example… we went to opaeka’a falls and then ended up continuing on to the Hindu monastery… we wouldn’t have thought about doing that without the app. Very user friendly and informative. Even my kids really enjoyed learning the history of the island.
We used these tours extensively on Kauai and the Big Island and were so grateful for them. They work as intended, with the narration starting as you approach each site. The words are mostly taken from Doughty's books so they were often familiar, but it's a real benefit to hear it when you need it. Two notes: We are pretty sure the road to Mau'umae Beach (near Mauna Kea Beach on the Big Island) has been severed. Also on Kauai, the road in Kokee was closed beyond Kalalau lookout so people were walking the last mile of the road to Pu'u O Kila lookout.
The content of this app (and the associated book) is really great, and with better debugging this would be a 5-star app. However, technologically this seems to be a work in progress, and there were several technical bugs that required some fiddling to figure out. Most notably, even when you have the offline content downloaded, if your WiFi or cellular signal is poor but existent, you can’t access any content; you have to explicitly put your phone in airplane mode and turn off WiFi, which is pretty annoying especially when you’re driving through areas of patchy coverage. Also, in the offline mode the pictures in the articles don’t seem to have been saved so don’t show (even though the update logs indicate that that that was supposed to be fixed in the version I had). Additionally, if you try to view content in landscape mode, the content is still displayed in portrait mode but with landscape settings, meaning that most of the text is cut off and illegible — the only workaround I found was to turn on rotation lock and keep my phone in portrait mode. Finally, the content was stuck loading indefinitely when I first tried to access it as a guest, which didn’t have a workaround, though I see that the release 5 days ago supposedly fixed that.
I pay annually for the Hawaii Revealed book but I have to pay again to use the new app. Furthermore the book does not seem to be up to date. Not happy!!!
WOW! What an amazing guide for our incredible adventures around Maui - we just got back from our honeymoon there and loved tuning in on each car ride! We did the road to Hana and couldn’t wait to hop back in the car for more facts and learning. We sadly couldn’t go all the way around as part of the road collapsed past Haleakala national park, but thankfully we were able to hike Pipiwai trail & get to the “7 sacred pools” before turning around! Andrew’s suggestions through this app for waterfalls were epic and we loved every moment of the drive (except driving back during the dark because we enjoyed ourselves so much stopping so often! Whoops!). However the commentary on this guide helped us pick and choose where to stop that would be the best use of our time and we’d use it again and highly recommend it. We also appreciated the commentary through Kihei and Wailea, as well as up to both Ka’anapali & Lahaina, and down through Paia. We loved the snorkelling tips and it lead us to two magical spots one near Wailea and the other near Ka’anapali seeing many sea turtles and 2 monk seals, plus a plethora of fish! Thanks so much team revealed, we will use again.
