Allows accurate display of speed and distance to scale. I used primarily to speed match my DCC locos so I could run them together in a consist without problems. Only issue I had was that the magnet on the axle used to count rotations was so strong it was disrupted by any steel in the track like track nails thus messing up speed calculations. I made a test track without steel nails to do my initial testing then I pulled all the steel nails from my layout and replaced them with brass pins. Problem solved.
Installation of the associated sensor took a bit of modification on my N scale box car, but was easy and came together quickly. Setting up the speedometer in the free iOS app was simple as could be. If only my smart home devices could pair this easily! I am just getting started in the hobby, so the speedometer isn't as necessary as for some of the folks with large layouts and multiple operators, but the speed and distance features really add that extra layer of realism, and really gets me excited to continue to expand my rail lines! Thanks Boulder Creek Engineering—keep up the awesome work!
This on-board model train speedometer provide accurate scale speed and distance information. Not need for speed tunnels or other fixed location speed measurement devices. The hardware is simple to install in a suitable piece of rolling stock and after setting scale and wheel diameter, the app is ready to use. As your train moves, the speed and distance data is sent to your app and updated continuously. No more guessing how fast your train is moving or how far you have gone.
