It’s been invaluable for my Japanese learning and the stories are genuinely enjoyable -- Frezioh, 2025-07-26 ### ***** "Great app with insightful explanations" This app is great for practicing and learning Japanese, with so many useful features. The core is mini stories broken up into short chapters that you can read and listen to (you can even choose the speed of the reading). You can also choose your level of kanji, and furigana will be provided for characters you don’t know yet. Within the story, grammar and occasionally cultural points can be viewed as pop ups - the explanations are clear and often enlightening. Maybe best of all, at the bottom of each chapter, you can ask questions and see questions that other people have asked. Like the grammar explanations, the answers are usually very helpful - I’ve gotten answers to great questions that I hadn’t even thought to ask. Don’t know a word in the story? Add it to your review flash cards. You can then review them in context (the sentence where you learned the word). The timing on how often the cards repeat depends on whether you say missed the answer or it was hard/medium/easy to remember. It’s a pretty effective way to learn new words. You can also choose to review the words you said were hard to remember, or that you’ve already learned. There are so many great features, I’m sure I’ve missed some, but you get the idea. Years ago satori didn’t have enough advance content, now there is plenty! The Audio during the reading is superior to most other apps. My only issue is, there is no audio during flash card practice, if the word is testing for definition. There should also be just sound as a testing option. I’m learning these words because while I listen I can’t recognize them. The audio if you click the word is robotic. That is my only complaint. Sometimes, I encounter a word that I learned a year ago, but now I have forgotten it. I would like to re-start a word with the new context. Also, it works really well in conjunction with WaniKani. I really enjoy the episodes with voice and sound effects. The voice actors have done amazing work. The fact that every single word and phrase has been annotated with detailed explanations is my favorite aspect of this app. I read other things in Japanese too, but they don’t have the benefit of these annotations. I also appreciate that each episode has its own discussion area. I often read through those to get further insight on some of the more difficult areas of an episode. I can only recommend this app to anyone learning Japanese. Even if the stories are difficult at first, often, they get easier a few episodes in as you learn the associated vocabulary. If not, there are many others to choose from. I often found it hard to go straight into real life materials like anime or video games coming from a academic setting. Hi Brian and cohorts! I have taken a long break from Satori (I kid of finished at the time) but kept my membership because of my admiration for your enterprise and because I knew new stories were coming. I have a technical point to make. I have looked at lots of youtubes and I am used to toggling the lesson on and off when I need time. I find it clunky to get to a new episode and then have to scroll to the bottom to start. (I don't want it to give me the nonstop version offered at the top. Maybe later, or in the car.) Then, if I want to stop, I have to stroll to the bottom of the episode then back up to look at the sentence then back down to start again. Then it starts before I can stroll back up the page and find my place. I seem to remember this function being more accessible before? I usually listen a couple of times before I look at the text, but when I go back for analysis I don't want to fuss with stop and start. At the end of my analysis I want to listen again with no gray spots at all in the flow of words. Anyway, congrats on staying with it.
