Description

“The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor.” —Michael Marshall Smith, bestselling author

Typewriter. Ring-binder. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the writing tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop.

Tailor-made for creating long manuscripts, Scrivener banishes page fright by allowing you to compose your text in any order, in sections as large or small as you like. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. Grow your manuscript organically, idea by idea.

Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: meticulously outline every last detail first, or hammer out a complete draft and restructure later. Or do a bit of both. All text sections in Scrivener are fully integrated with its outlining tools, so working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a tap away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop.

Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand. Write a description based on a photograph. Reference a video or PDF. Check for consistency with an earlier chapter. On the iPad, open two documents side-by-side; on the iPhone, flip between research and writing with just two taps.

Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, simply compile everything into a single document for printing, or export to popular formats such as Word, PDF, Final Draft or plain text. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still keep your editor happy.

I’m disappointed

Toca Bocan suurin fani on

I downloaded this app and paid for it, because I had fallen in love with the aesthetic opportunity to create a writing mood or whatever people call it. Well, it turned out it was not possible for iOS and that is what makes me sad and mad. (Has made ever since last July…” I WOULD DEFINITELY BUY IT, (I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE PRICE) IF THERE WERE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES FOR iOS USERS!!!!

iOS app lacks many of the features of the desktop app, but they work well together

First of all - if you like writing, get Scrivenet desktop app. It’s the best thing I’ve found for writing, you can use it in so many ways and the way it allows you to gather research and construct stories, it’s just amazing. The iOS app complements the desktop app well. It lacks many features found there and I don’t know if I could recommend the iOS app alone if you don’t own the desktop app - there are many things you can’t do if you don’t have the desktop app. But they sync together with Dropbox so you can work on both as long as you remember to sync. The sync is implemented via Dropbox so you have to have that. It’s not perfect and you often get errors or have to sync twice to get it to work. This takes away a star. Scrivener in general is most definitely not made for collaboration, because you get conflicts really easily. Scrivener is built so that each scene is a separate file, so conflict doesn’t break your whole project - you simply get copies of conflicting scenes and can then choose which ones to use. But you can still get into trouble so I wouldn’t recommend it at all as a collaborative tool (meaning you both work on same .scrivener document). But if you work in separate programs, you can export to Final Draft etc, so this way to collaboration is probably easier - exchanging scenes work. However, I’m not sure if you can do this in the iOS app so I’m mostly talking about the general workflow of using both desktop and iOS apps together. The iOS app alone works well and you can do the basic stuff there quite ok. So if you like writing on your iPad and own the full version on your desktop, then this is a really nice additional value. Whether you should buy it when you don’t have the desktop app - I’ve recently run into situations, where I couldn’t do certain things in the iOS version (or it was very slow there) and I had to go to desktop app to do this quicker. One task like this is organizing or moving scenes between different projects - it’s perhaps possible in iOS app, but very cumbersome with a touch interface and one-project-open-at-the-time. But with the desktop software there, these limitations don’t feel so deal-breaking and iOS app becomes more like an additional tool to the main software. Something to write with when traveling or needing to have a distraction-free writing experience on a smaller device. I do my morning-pages on iOS-version. Big thumbs up for Scrivener as whole (desktop+iOS) - amazing software.

Syncs flawlessly my ***

Sphisis on

Intuitive, sleak and a joy to use. Unfortunately I never got the cross device sync to work properly via dropbox and now having just lost a big chunk of text again into the oblivion because of a sync bug, i’ve just had enough. I’m going to return using google documents. That way i’ll at least get to keep my stuff safe. That, after all, is the most important feature of the word processor.

Just a toy that doesn’t deliver

Do not think you can create a Scrivener project on your Mac, sync it with Dropbox and then continue polishing it on the go on your iPad or iPhone. This is impossible or unreliable at best. This app needs serious work before it can be marketed for even semi-professional use.

Näppärä kirjoittamisen tuki

Kymppikassi on

Indispensable

One from the north on

An elegant combination of clarity and power. My main writing app on my iPad. It has increased my productivity and enjoyment of the process a lot. Hoping in the future it might be possible to embed images within texts more flexibly, especially with resizing and captions. Thank you for this great app, hope it gets many updates and also new functiona, without losing its elegance and unclutteredness.

Awesome

ptj_tsubasa on

The best app for long-form, structured writing. Just as great on iOS as on Mac, and cross-platform working using Dropbox works great.
