Honestly, it reminds me a lot of duolingo. The way it works is: First, you preview a short dialogue and have an AI voice read you the conversation. Second, you learn the key concept, which is typically the main grammar concept used in the dialogue. Third, AI will read the sentence aloud, and you fill in the blanks with a provided word bank. Fourth, the AI will read the provided dialogue aloud POVing as one person, and you would POV as the other person in the conversation. Essentially, youre recreating the conversation from memory with AI. They will grade your sentence accuracy and pronunciation. Good points: - provides way to practice and memorize dialogue that you can actually use in real like conversations with Koreans - aligns with units with TTMIK website Criticism: -does not offer any guidance or clarity on what about your pronunciation sounds awkward, and therefore no actual solution to fix pronunciation if that’s you’re goal. You only know if it was bad or good based on a 100 point scale, which is pretty useless. - unless I’m missing something, there’s no way to freely chat with AI in order to comfortably practice speaking whether through text or just voice recognition conversation. Very surprised this isn’t a feature - AI really isn’t used in a innovative way that justifies a monthly $16.99 charge. Final thoughts: The price is pretty unjustified. There’s nothing about this app where after using, I felt that the price makes sense given the benefits it offered. If you already subscribe to the TTMIK courses, you might as well just memorize the example sentences or conversation practice they offer on their website and avoid having to pay over $30 a month for both services. If you want to pick one over the other, choose their TTMIK courses. The Seyo app is very simple and straightforward, and honestly, not very innovative. Furthermore, since they use AI and kind of frame as their competitive advantage, ChatGPT is one of their main competitors. Almost everything they offer can be replaced by ChatGPT or similar AI services that are free, such as Character AI (which now is starting to offer language practice services). Therefore, I truly cannot understand the justified means for the price. I’m a big supporter of TTMIK, but they fell short on this app for me. It’s just meeting bare minimum. Everything about this app is great except for the voices which in my opinion is the whole point of this app - to practice speaking natural Korean. At the advanced level, imitating an AI voice which lacks truly natural intonation that suits the context of the conversation snippets is not the best way to work on advanced Korean. It helps you to start speaking and get more familiar with how the vocabulary you have learned can be used in various conversations. While I found the initial unit helpful and efficient in its content, it wasn’t very clear on what or how the activities should be done. I feel more clear directions would make it easier. In the speaking exercises the option to hear a sentence more slowly wasn’t much different than the initial speed and still difficult to understand. The AI voices didn’t convey the nuance I’d hoped either. I did not get to experience more than the first unit before I hit the app paywall. So while I did enjoy overall what I was able to experience, I felt a longer trial would’ve been necessary and helpful to see if the app would be worth my investment. Pronunciation is what I want to focus on and the voices were the weakest part of the app I was able to experience. I hope that this improves and if it is improved those that have completed the first unit can experience it again to see if it fits their needs. Here’s my pros / cons / feedback: - **Show vocabulary in Hangul during conversations:** As a beginner, I prefer to focus on pronunciation. However, many ‘chats’ require me to memorize new words while *also* trying pronounce them, which can be frustrating. - **Connect directly to the core TTMiK curriculum:** I would love to complete a few chapters in a TMMiK book and then immediately test new concepts by speaking them out loud. This would help reinforce my learning. - **Encourages speaking practice:** Seyo is a great way to get me into the habit of speaking Korean, even if it’s not perfect. Reading and writing are separate from forming thoughts and expressing them verbally. Seyo helps me bridge this gap. I’m so focused on learning Korean grammar that I forget …to actually try speaking Korean 😜 - **Overall, I think the app is excellent.** You can also try other AI products like ChatGPT or Gemini, but they can be frustrating because they’re not specifically designed to help with languages. I often waste time trying to get them to work the way I want. - TTMiK is a company that demonstrates its commitment to refining and producing high-quality products. I’m confident that Seyo will continue to improve. -- Champion.#2, 2025-02-15 ### ****- "Great Potential but Needs Improvement" I’ve been using SEYO, TTMIK’s Korean learning app, and overall, I’m enjoying it. It has a lot of potential, but there are some areas where it could improve to become a standout app on the market. First, the speech recognition needs work. I’ve found myself saying answers correctly, but the app doesn’t pick up on them and marks them as wrong. This can be frustrating, especially when I know I’m speaking correctly. Second, the AI voices feel unnatural. For learners, it would be more beneficial to hear real people speaking. Natural voices would help users develop a better sense of Korean pronunciation and speech patterns. Third, the lessons feel a bit too “by the book.” While the structured approach works, it can sometimes feel rigid and repetitive. Incorporating more interactive and enjoyable elements, like video lessons or roleplaying real-life situations, would make the learning experience more engaging. You could even draw inspiration from the excellent video content on your website! That said, the app interface is fantastic. It’s clean, user-friendly, and easy to navigate, which makes learning feel less intimidating. With some improvements in content and functionality, SEYO could easily become a 5-star app. However, as it stands, there’s still room for growth. Right now, I’d give it a 3.5 out of 5. Seyo is the perfect complement to my other methods of studying Korean. I am able to practice in bite-sized lessons, choosing my own level and interests. Practicing with nonjudgmental speech recognition is really helpful in correcting pronunciation, achieving fluency in speech, and learning essential expressions. I enjoy using the chat function and having it recognize and validate my attempts at normal conversation. The detailed feedback and graphical representation of my speech are amazing. It has made me comfortable with the sound of my own voice, and never chides me for endless repetition attempts. I even felt more comfortable speaking with my human tutor, a happy surprise. It is new, and I look forward to exciting developments as it has great potential. The developers as with their other products are responsive to suggestions and support. It provides helpful feedback and allows me to practice without feeling self conscious.
