Privacy redefined: no user IDs

Published by: SimpleX Chat

Description

SimpleX - the first messaging network without user identifiers of any kind (not even random numbers) - 100% private by design!

SimpleX Chat features:
- quantum resistant end-to-end encrypted messages, with editing, replies and deletion.
- disappearing messages with opt-out per contact/group.
- message reactions.
- delivery receipts, with opt-out per contact or group.
- multiple chat profiles, with hidden profiles.
- app access and self-destruct passcodes.
- incognito mode - unique to SimpleX Chat.
- end-to-end encrypted images and files.
- voice messages up to 5 minutes – also end-to-end encrypted.
- "live" messages – they update for all recipients as you type them, every few seconds - unique to SimpleX Chat.
- connect via one-time invitation links or via long-term public addresses.
- secret chat groups - only group members know the group exists and who is the member.
- end-to-end encrypted audio and video calls.
- connection security code verification, for contacts and group members – to protect from man-in-the-middle attacks (e.g. invitation link substitution).
- end-to-end encrypted push notifications (they contain only encrypted meta-data, not the actual content).
- encrypted portable chat database - you can transfer your chat contacts and history to another device.
- all local files and media are encrypted by default.
- animated images and "stickers" (e.g., from GIF and PNG files and from 3rd party keyboards).
SimpleX Chat advantages:
- privacy of your identity, profile, contacts and metadata: unlike any other existing messaging platform, SimpleX uses no phone numbers or any other identifiers assigned to the users - not even random numbers. This protects the privacy of who you are communicating with, hiding it from SimpleX platform servers and from any observers.
- complete protection against spam and abuse: as you have no identifier on SimpleX platform, you cannot be contacted unless you share a one-time invitation link or an optional temporary user address.
- full ownership, control and security of your data: SimpleX stores all user data on client devices, the messages are only held temporarily on SimpleX relay servers until they are received.
- decentralized proxied peer-to-peer network: you can use SimpleX Chat via your own relay servers and still communicate with people using pre-configured or any other SimpleX relay servers.
- fully open-source code.
You can connect to anybody you know via link or scan QR code (in the video call or in person) and start sending messages instantly - no emails, phone numbers or passwords needed.

Your profile and contacts are only stored in the app on your device - relay servers do not have access to this information.

All messages are end-to-end encrypted using open-source quantum resistant double-ratchet protocol; the messages are delivered via relay servers using open-source SimpleX Messaging Protocol.

SimpleX Chat Reviews

pretty decent app

udontcareee on

up to par with the other private messengers on the app store, 3 stars because it’s really annoying no matter if i mute a chat or not i still get every notification for it

Used to work better

I have to toggle from wifi to data for messages to to send and receive most of the time. Calls no longer connect either. I get notified occasionally that I’ve had a msg or call. It’s quite frustrating.

I found it good for chatting. But it is impossible to call a friend and talk. Or I don't know how to set up the app correctly, so that you can talk immediately like in Signal.

Not bad

Make a bot maker feature like on telegram and it will be perfect

Take all the encrypted chat platforms and combine their best features, add a little cyber-ingenuity and you get SimpleX.

Unable to connect on typical local Wi-Fi

We have a technical. on

United States

It is not unusual for public Wi-Fi to be port 80 / 443 only and the app does not work. (This is the reason for the one star) I set this up on an iPod and it doesn’t support the main available network. I tried to migrate and the qr was too complex for the devices to scan. It also appears that the chat is single device based which would make it unsuitable for me to use as a primary IM system. (Same issue with Signal). Seems that once these issues are fixed it could be a very interesting system.

Cant attach multiple pictures at once with descriptions

Cant attach multiple pictures at once with descriptions, really a bummer thats something i would like changed

End-to-end encryption by default

ThemePro on

United States

With governments cracking down on privacy apps, what you need is a decentralized, free and open-source end-to-end secure messaging platform. An app like Telegram doesn’t even provide end-to-end encryption by default and thus poses a risk to users. SimpleX checks all the boxes and it’s cross-platform. The only potential downside is the apparent lack of a web app (PWA). If Apple were to remove the app at the behest of a government, it would be problematic unless you were in the EU and could sideload the app.

One of the best open source chat platforms I ever used

Chaotic Oven on

United States

It’s super polished, takes like 2 seconds to set up, very customizable, clean interface in all platforms, and really fast No more to the clunky nature of Matrix, the sketchiness of Telegram, or the ancient IRC. SimpleX is definitely the way to go for all (or most) of your communication needs
