Smart Shades FAQ
Is Smart Shades free?
Yes, Smart Shades is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is Smart Shades legit?
🤔 The Smart Shades app's quality is mixed. Some users are satisfied, while others report issues. Consider reading individual reviews for more context.
Since you did the lastest update for smart shades 3 the app will not open at all and crashes. Done the usual reboot of phone. Reinstalling app etc and it still will not function. Do you not test these things before putting them live?
Crash bang wallop
App crashes instantly on iPad after new update June 7 2023
The worst smart blinds out there
The product is awful, no controls to operate without your phone, installation not great very noisy, slow and now the app won’t work.
Extremely dissatisfied after spending nearly £1000 to not the house out should have gone with axis.
This is a very terrible product and even worse app you haven’t even got the fundamentals right.
It’s not just about the app
I have several of these to control blinds in my home. The product is good. It does what you expect and is reasonably priced. I had a problem with signal but that turned out to be interference and nothing to do with the product or app. I have to say, the customer service team were very helpful. Firstly they actually replied unlike many. If not for them I would still be wondering what the issue was.
The app..
So yes it could be quicker, and slicker but given that most people (I would expect) have a smart device to give voice commands too the app is perfectly adequate. The setup process for devices is quite quick, well explained and easy to do. I’ve given 4 stars for the overall experience because often when you have a issue with an app that’s it, your dead in the water. So it really isn’t just about the app.
In short..
Good product, great service and reasonable app, or good if you are just using it to set up devices.
Updated review after service experience
Like one of the other reviewers, I updated the firmware of one of my Soma Smart Shade devices through this app ok, but when I updated my second device, the app crashed halfway through installing it and continually crashed when I tried to connect to it.
I reached out to the customer services, and they were able to replace my faulty device. By all means go ahead and update the firmware on your devices, but be wary that you could run into the same issues I had!
App keeps crashing
Have 2 units but one cannot connect as the app keeps crashing. Motor is slow to respond when setting up so the chain kept pulling when blind reached end point. Ripped the gear cog to shreds.
Needs Siri Shortcut integration
This app works as advertised to control blinds, but since Siri Shortcuts was introduced with iOS 12 it’d be a massive improvement if the developer could integrate this feature as an alternative to needing a bridge device.
Hardware great..software awful
The hardware is great and does a great job. There is so much more that the software can do..solar intensity, sunrise/sunset etc...let’s hope it can better.
Blinds are great, the app is awful
I’ve got 3 blinds across one wall, and I can deal with them all moving at a different speed. I can ignore that for the convenience. It would also be useful if they rounded off the top and bottom of the motor unit, so the blinds could roll over easier without getting stuck (for those of us that have no option but to mount the motor under the blind).
But the app is pretty rubbish. I ended up getting the connect module so I can use the blinds properly with HomeKit. I suspect they’ve not worked too hard on the app because it’ll push people to buy the costly connect module. Pretty crafty.
The only thing I use the app for is the battery, which is sketchy at best. I have them set up with the solar panels, and they sit at around 85%. Then when I use them, they hit about 40%, then bounce straight back up to ~80% again. I figured I’d charge them using the power cord to see how that goes. In the time it took me to plug in the cord and pick up my phone (about 30 seconds), the battery went from 82% to 100%. So I really don’t trust the battery indicator.
Overall I’d recommend the blinds, but factor in that you’ll likely get fed up with the app and end up buying the connect module too.
They aren’t listening to these reviews
As nearly everyone has said ‘dusk to dawn’ would be great! Mine raises okay by the morning ‘trigger’ I set, but for some weird reason the blind has halted halfway down each day this week via the evening ‘trigger’ ?? So I’ve deleted everything and I’m just about to try a re install.
