## SmarTest Calprotectin Description
SmarTest Calprotectin ist ein manuell durchgeführter Schnelltest inklusive einer für seine Auswertung entwickelten Smartphone-App zum quantitativen Nachweis des Entzündungsmarkers Calprotectin im menschlichen Stuhl. Er dient als Hilfe in der Verlaufskontrolle und der Therapieüberwachung von chronisch-entzündlichen Darmerkrankungen (z. B. Morbus Crohn oder Colitis ulcerosa). 
Calprotectin ist ein Kalzium-bindendes Protein, das von spezifischen Immunzellen, den neutrophilen Granulozyten (Neutrophile) in großen Mengen gebildet und bei Entzündungsgeschehen freigesetzt wird. Bei einer entzündlichen Darmerkrankung wandern Neutrophile ins Darmlumen und setzen dort Calprotectin frei, das sich dann im Stuhl nachweisen lässt. Anhand der klinischen Symptomatik lassen sich Patienten mit chronisch-entzündlichen Darmerkrankungen (CED) wie Morbus Crohn und Colitis ulcerosa jedoch oft nur schwer von Patienten unterscheiden, die unter dem gewöhnlichen Reizdarmsyndrom leiden. Mit der zusätzlichen Bestimmung von Calprotectin im Stuhl können Entzündungen im Darmtrakt hingegen klinisch sicher diagnostiziert werden. Eine erhöhte Calprotectin-Konzentration im Stuhl gibt hier Aufschluss über das Vorliegen einer Entzündung im Darm. Durch diese nicht-invasive Calprotectin-Bestimmung kann der Arzt bei niedriger Konzentration den Patienten mit gewöhnlichem Reizdarm daher oft eine unnötige invasive Koloskopie ersparen. Da in wissenschaftlichen Studien nachgewiesen ist, dass die Konzentration von Calprotectin im Stuhl gut mit den histologischen und endoskopischen Befunden der Krankheitsaktivität bei Patienten mit CED korreliert, kann man die Calprotectin-Konzentration im Stuhl auch diagnostisch nutzen um einen Therapieerfolg objektiv zu dokumentieren. Ferner kann man dadurch aktuell symptomfreie CED Patienten überwachen, um frühzeitig einen Rückfall (ein Rezidiv) der CED feststellen und eindämmen zu können.
