This is a very difficult game to learn but the tutorials combined with AI adapted opponents allows you to progress at a reasonable speed. Great game!

I assume this is popular because there’s so little choice out there. So many problems have missing paths, both mistakes (what’s the use of a problem that only shows the correct path) and solutions. They clearly stole the problems from some user-submitted database and didn’t bother to QA any of it.

You can’t seem to play a game. You can watch other famous games replayed, but the app doesn’t have a clear way to just play against the computer.

I really like this game a lot. It is well designed and implemented. The only issue I have is with those red crosses that would not allow players to enter anything so users would not learn those were bad moves. Sometimes learning by making mistakes may work better😀

### ****- "Good gameplay, poor app user experience"
The gameplay in SmartGo one seems fine so far and it has some good features, especially if you get the very fair priced Pro add-on. The computer gameplay is good; it’s challenging, like playing a very experienced opponent, but that’s how you improve. The thing to keep in mind is this app isn’t to teach you how to play Go or optimal strategy, it’s for you to practice Go. You will need to dive into some of the many great books about playing Go to learn the basics and strategies and the app even helps you find those books. 

The issues that lose the app a star are around user experience. The app’s layout is not intuitive and if you happen to have skipped the first time user demo (which a professional app developer should know most people do) there is absolutely no help available, not even a way to launch the demo again. Don’t know what that icon does? Too bad. Don’t know what the colors mean on move recommendations? Oh well. You’re left to just click buttons and try to infer what does what and what setting changes what function on your own. This app needs the developer to spend some money having a UX professional do a thorough review and then take their recommendations and implement them.

### **--- "Discouraging for novices"
Even the lowest AI setting is near impossible to beat for newcomers to Go. It does not teach novices, it only discourages. While a new player is thinking only a couple moves ahead, the computer seems to, almost without fail, set itself up many, many moves in advance, no matter how the scenario plays out. For instance, even when undoing 5-10 moves back from a tricky situation and trying to learn how you should have approached it, there is often still no way for you to kill/survive—in any possible outcome. This does not benefit novice learning. I’m sure this is a great app for everyone else, but I’d bet that more of the newcomers who use this app get pushed away from the game rather than desire to pursue it more.

If the AI had an option catered toward true novices, this would be a 4-5 star review instead
