Two years ago we used this app as a way to track what our oldest tried, it also was really helpful to us in learning how to navigate BLW as new parents. Back then it was only around a few dollars per month, which was very reasonable and we could afford to spare that. I just downloaded this app again to use for our second baby and the app is unusable unless you pay $20 a month or the year subscription. Holy cow at the price increase! I’ll just add notes to my calendar on my phone over paying that much for a digital recipe book and a log.

While in theory it’s a good app, the recipes always say, “cook until desired” or vague terms. As a parent who isn’t a great chef, I need exacts like “6 minutes on high heat” and not vague term recipes. Disappointed because everything else is great, but recipes need to be exact instructions with babies, not ranges.

Initially i was able to search how to serve foods with no limit. Now its telling me I have “4 searches left”. And $100 a year for baby’s safety is crazy. Uninstalling this.

Edit: now thats a 5 star company! They listened to everyone’s voices and the database is free again! Will be reinstalling. Thank you!!!

This app was recommended to me by moms with 1 year olds so I was excited to start it. But of course, like everything else now with baby gear, there’s a paywall. Want to search for appropriate foods for your baby’s age? Limited number of searches before the paywall. Want to see meal ideas? Paywall. Want to heart a food your baby likes? Paywall. Access to meal ideas for your baby shouldn’t come with a price tag. Really disappointed.

I absolutely do not appreciate the snaky way the solid starts team suddenly changed their policy on their food database. I just started solids with my firstborn a month ago and have been using their food database (advertised over and over as always free on their instagram/website) to learn how to cut/prepare food safely for my infant, until suddenly I received a countdown saying I had five free searches left before needing to pay an exorbitant price of $20/month or $100 per year. I immediately went to their instagram, where I was confused by their continued messaging stating the food database would continue to be free even with the rollout of their new app. Today, those comments are mysteriously gone, and have been replaced by stuffy corporate legal messaging stating they needed to make this change to continue to offer quality information to parents. Needless to say, I deleted the app.

Update: I am very pleased to hear that Solid Starts has decided to rollback the update and make the food database free again. I have updated my rating accordingly, as I find the food database to be a great resource for new parents starting solids, and I am glad to see it is no longer held behind a paywall.

This app was recommended to me many times by friends. Now that my baby is approaching the age that we need this information, it turns out the app has been completely paywalled just over a week ago. It now costs $20/month or $100/year to see ANYTHING. This from a company who previously said they would always make important knowledge like how to safely feed your children accessible and free. Disappointing is an understatement. This is just another money grab aimed at nervous first time parents.

Updated: See developers response below! So happy to see a company actually listening to the consumer and making changes for the better! This app was wonderful during my journey feeding my first. Looking forward to using it again with my second. Thank you, Solid Starts! 

I’m so disappointed to learn that this app is now only usable with a paid subscription. I used this app with my first child in 2022 and everything was free about the app. I just redownloaded it to use with my second child and now you have to pay for everything? I can’t even see the how/when to feed something without paying. That is such a disappointment that Solid Starts got greedy after building a fan base and began charging mothers for every feature that used to be free. I would understand charging for special features but the basics should still be free for those of us who just need to easily reference something. It’s useless without paying now.
