This update has rendered our Sonos speakers near unusable
I wish I had tried out the Sonos app before purchasing their system. I've been using the app for 5 or so years so have given the benefit of the doubt that they will eventually get it right but the release of version 80.0 has prompted me to write this. General notes: The WiFi only approach means you can't use your normal apps to play music (although certain apps such as Spotify have direct support for connecting to a speaker). Instead you add a Sonos version of whatever music service you use within the Sonos app itself, assuming it is available. The one advantage would be that you can play directly from a music collection on a network drive, however they have 'temporarily' removed this feature in the latest version, locking me out of my main collection (with no notification/warning in the app release notes). WiFI: The WiFI connection is not always guaranteed depending on your setup and there are often failures making a connection, or delays pressing 'play' which I haven't experienced with a direct Bluetooth connection (although I'm no Bluetooth fan as only one phone can control a device). The app quality itself is very much not up to best practices and poor from a usability point of view. The search is super awkward as results are organised by service, and will generally only return direct matches. The search used to be terrible, then they massively improved it (but weren't sure, so still had a 'switch to old search' button) but now with version 80.0 it appears to be slightly worse again which I find hard to articulate as I can't compare versions, but it's probably due to the amount of screen real estate given over to individual results (fine when you get a hit in the top 3 results, terrible if you have to menu dive). Sometimes the 'Sonos radio' results come first, which no one outside of Sonos-hq requested. Recommendation: allow 6 results at top from the 'principal' general purpose music service i.e. a service like Spotify/Deezer which can provide access to a large commercial music collection. The 80.0 Home Screen puts important features such as the next/prev track buttons into the 'now playing' submenu, so not available when you open the app like it used to be, and likewise 'simplifies' by moving all the favourite items into a submenu. Good for simplicity on paper, bad for usability in practice. Further: There are frequent interruptions from Sonos product upsell dept. Please could Sonos put whomever from the usability team is fighting the go
All the things that used to be so simple to do in the old app is now really unintuitive. I have to Google everything and rely on someone else’s instructions on how to use the app. It’s the worst UX I have seen in a long time
The previous version was working fine. Why rush a new app that’s lacking features and is full of bugs boggles the mind. The executives that were in charge should be fired. I’m stuck with a 7am alarm that can’t be removed because the current version doesn’t have the alarm setting feature. Sonos really missed a big point here that put a large dent in their reputation.
Ever since the “new” app of 2024, the system is unstable. Constant “no connected devices”. I don’t even care about all the noise re missing features, but core functionality being broken in a product suite I’ve spent ~4k on is unacceptable. I hope this gets sorted as the speakers themselves are good, but the software is an absolute disaster.
You know the way the band on the titanic kept playing while the ship sunk… this app is a bit like that with the new update but you may not hear any music.
Avoid updating to this release. It’s toxic. Several features are removed such as ability to browse an album or the track that’s playing, search your music library. The UI is a hot mess, providing a one stop shop for your services apparently…. but not any shop you’d want to frequent. I’m looking at all these Sonos devices around my house and crying! Certainly won’t be adding/upgrading any more Sonos devices until (and if) this app improves. The mad thing is - this is self inflicted - nobody except their most deranged customers could have asked for this mess of an app. Avoid like the plague
Not sure if it’s to accommodate the “new” and great Sonos headphones (it’s not the world needs “another” wireless headphone in the world! But the latest version of the app has become so unresponsive and backwards! Next to useless. Please can we have the old app back! Thanks!
New app is dreadful. Missing lots of basic features and others or hidden away. Not intuitive. Was there such an outcry about the old version that it had to be changed so much and so badly?? Nearly every time I use it I can’t perform some (what I thought was) a basic action.
My Sonos speaker is amazing, the sound is incredible. Just one problem, this app. It is probably the worst app I have come across. It took me half a day plus numerous online conversations with Sonos customer service to pair with my music. Thank you for your patience in this matter. I wasn’t the only one with this problem as was confirmed my the person I was dealing with. Unfortunately that wasn’t the end of the matter. This app continues to be glitchy, one minute identifying my music and then suddenly dropping it. Ridiculous situation and so unprofessional. I certainly will not be recommending any Sonos products to anyone I know as long as Sonos continues to allow this halfhearted app to underperform.
