Point your iPhone at any room, street or venue and SoundLevel reads the level in decibels on a live, colour-coded gauge that moves the instant the sound does. Most sound level meters hand you a bare number and leave you guessing. SoundLevel tells you what the number means. Every reading is matched against a whisper-to-jet-engine scale — library, café, busy restaurant, heavy traffic, rock gig — with a plain-English note on how long that level is safe to stay in. A 70 stops being an abstract digit and starts being a decision. Because ears adapt. A room that feels "fine" after twenty minutes can still sit above the level where hearing damage begins, and by the time something sounds painful the exposure has already happened. A number you can see removes the guesswork. HOW IT WORKS Open the Meter tab and the gauge is already live. Tap Start to run a timed session, stop it whenever you like, then give it a name and a note — "upstairs flat, Saturday night", "spin class", "flight home". History keeps every session with its own trace chart, plus your loudest, quietest and overall average. Reference is the full decibel scale with an example and a safe-exposure note at every level, and the current reading is matched to the nearest entry, so you get "sounds like a busy restaurant" rather than a naked number. Settings holds calibration, dBA and keep-screen-on. AN HONEST NOTE SoundLevel uses your iPhone microphone, so readings are a careful estimate — this is not a calibrated or certified instrument, and it should not be relied on for workplace, legal or occupational-safety decisions. There is a calibration offset of -15 to +15 dB in Settings if you want to line it up with a reference meter, plus an A-weighting (dBA) toggle to match how loudness feels to the ear. Measuring runs while the app is open in front of you. PRIVACY Audio is analysed live on your device purely to produce a level. Nothing is recorded or played back, no measurements leave your iPhone, and there is no account, no ads and no tracking. FULL ACCESS SoundLevel Premium unlocks the complete app: unlimited saved sessions with min, average and peak dB, the full saved trace for every session, names and notes on your history, the whole decibel reference scale and the hearing guide.
