Standard Notes is such a product. I enjoy knowing that they cover my information with a cloak of protection, and that I can use the product in similar and familiar ways as other notes programs. This app could use a nice little cheat sheet, especially for beginners. However, in the folder/tags screen on the iPhone, the far end of long, nested tag names aren't visible, so you have to rely on emojis to select the one you want. I love how it looks on the screen, and how you can drag things to folders or sub-folders. It looks like I'm hooked for life, but they say they will stick to our discounted 5-year price when the time comes. Being owned by Proton is very reassuring, because I coincidentally use every feature Proton has to offer, with great starting discounts, as well. All the top-notch security is just an added bonus. Customer service for SN is out of this world, too. I set up the one week trial to see if it was worth the price. I work exclusively in markdown and spreadsheets, so having an app the natively works with both would be lovely for all my notes. I decided to sign up for the $120/yr subscription because it offered a weeks trial. Well, sadly the trial is just the regular app. I can’t use any of the features that supposedly belong to the subscription. Apple shows the trial is active for a few more days, but anything I try to do in the app asks me to upgrade to the subscription I technically already have. Doesn’t work on my phone, my iPad, or my mac. Why bother giving me a trial if I can’t test to see if it’s worth? -- Nah thx tho, 2024-10-08 ### ****- "Great App, Little Expensive to Unlock Features" Love it so far, although $90 or $120 a year is a lot to commit to without a trial period of the paid features. A couple of times after heavy use my screen went white but it started again after I closed the app and reopened it. It also exits select mode when scrolling through a list of notes to which one wants to check boxes to assign values (stars, pins, tags). Self hosting takes some effort but it eventually runs without any issues for me. They asked me to make a whole new account to move everything over instead of helping fix my existing account. Haven’t had the time to figure out an alternative yet, but how can I trust this app for important information anymore. I used to use this everyday for everything until this issue and this made me averse to it. Premium price for poor bandwidth and very limited capabilities. Many features to like but refusing to fix one simple issue breaks it all. They don’t even make it clear on their website that you should import notes in only tiny batches at a time over time, no mention in the instructions when I did it, and I looked before going ahead with the import. Only after it’s broken did they tell me that’s how it should be done. Again, what’s the point. Multi-device sync is what I am paying for and I can’t get it anymore. Need to figure out a way to back up all my notes and slowly get my data out of this. The point of using a notes app is to make life easier but if I have to spend hours on my weekends to fix an issue caused by the app and am unable to access my notes or have to delete my data, that too only one file at a time, to make it usable again or move my whole account to a new one instead of a simpler fix by tech what is the point of paying for it. Firstly, it's open source and I can self-host this, that is so important for me, but not only that, its extremely flexible. I don't have to self-host, I don't have to get a subscription, and best of all, if I want to, I can do all of the above. I can make a self-hosted version for the really private stuff, and use the general public version for other notes. The client app makes it easy to switch between the accounts without any issues. Furthermore, it has all the "green flags" of a secure application. For example, it warns me in advance that there is no password recovery. That's a clear sign that not only is their claim of end-to-end encryption true, but it also means that someone took the time to think carefully about how to ensure that users are aware of it. Best of all is that the "App Privacy" section makes it clear that no data is collected, which I can verify myself by looking through the source code before self-hosting. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. More to the point about the app itself is well designed - it has only the stuff I need (notes, tagging, basic formatting, and search) and nothing more. The notes sync between all my platforms (Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android). It's lovely.
