When I was a kid, and this app was first put onto the App Store, I loved this app. I had always been interested in astronomy, but being given a way to experience the night sky, especially in a way I could never really experience in a big city, was amazing. I would deliberately get lost in the sea of stars by zooming all the way in and look around for something interesting, or try to find my way back to the sun, sometimes I’d go forward and backward in time using the little scale on the upper right, or change how the sky looked entirely by changing to the different wavelength options they used to have (not that I knew what radio waves, ultraviolet had to do with anything, but that’s besides the point). You could take screenshots of certain areas and save them in a little library, and while constellations weren’t as visually interesting you could still see them through a sort of filter. You could just look up an object, satellite, nebula, etc, and it would all show up, newly launched satellites even had their own tab in the search bar. It had virtually anything you could have possibly wanted for looking for stars with a telescope, or just looking around the night sky the way I often did. The app clearly was popular, it had no real competition because of just how good it was, at least on the App Store. This was probably my favourite app of all time. So what happened? The long and short of it is that this app is no longer what it once was, you have to pay a subscription model to unlock many features that this app once had, if you don’t, you have lost much of the apps former functionality and will be hammered by ads. To the original developers, a genuine, heartfelt thank you for what you did, I wish I could recommend this app, ten years ago, this would have been a 6/5.

Bought this app many many years ago and now can’t use it since the banner to a free 1 week trial or purchase of the plus version. Never really used it that much in the first place and will not be using it again

Insanely aggressive ad frequency

nickthorpie on

Downloaded the app to watch the eclipse tonight. Cannot zoom in at all without getting an ad. Just got 4 ads in a row (literally within 2 minutes) so here I am writing an angry review. Shame you’d work so hard on an app and gum up the user experience that much Edit: I’m more than content with having ads in the free experience, but it almost feels like the ad behaviour is a bug. They pop up every time I pinch to zoom in on the sky. Once the ad is finished, the scene goes into a ‘locked’ mode where the scene does not move according to the iPhone accelerometer. I then have to shake my phone to get back to the live view, and do not have my zoom. This feels like the advertisements are impeding the functionality. If zooming in on live preview is a paid function, that should be clearly stated.

The app just overwhelms your with all kinds of notifications ninety percent of which would be relevant to you. I stopped using it for this reason.
