The website shows a clean metallic engraving while what you will receive is low quality, only half engraved, and barely visible unless shining a light on it. For being a $50 card I expected that the one part of the product that isn’t mass produced would be of quality but apparently not. When you attempt to contact customer service you must use an online chat, where you will have to waste time explaining the problem to someone from the Philippines that only responds with pre-typed generic messages. There is no way to directly talk to a real representative of Step and no phone number to boot. Eventually they were able to contact the higher ups themselves and responded telling me that the way I received the card was how they are meant to be manufactured and matched the example they had on hand. If they literally have their own example why couldn’t that be shown on their website. The picture shown on their website is obviously a mock-up but does not mention this fact. I feel like I have been scammed with false advertising on a product that they have tried so hard to market as premium. If people know what the card really looked like they would realize it’s a scam… I would take my business elsewhere especially since there is no real way to get in contact with these people. I have seen other reviews about people having real financial issues that are never taken seriously and I believe them based on how little their team cares. I have been a loyal customer for years and they don’t seem to care about my business. So they closed my account with no prior warning, no big deal— I barely use it. But now as I try to communicate with them in regard to how I receive my funding it’s as if the woman (Maria) that responds to emails isn’t even a real person. She just copy pastes the same email stating to read their articles and policies as if I haven’t already. And if the answer is TRULY in the articles then please tell me it instead of repeating the same at And what makes it even more frustrating is that they say “contact us on the app for live chat service” ALTHOUGH THEY LOCKED ME OUT OF THE APP UPON ACCOUNT CLOSURE. And they have no phone number, so the only way for me to contact them is through this email system with what I can only imagine is automated bot or something— stuck in limbo with money stuck on my account. It’s the most absolutely ridiculous situation I’ve ever ran into with a “bank” before. I’m stuck in email limbo repeating myself to this bot while my $500+ just sits there. So maybe this will get their attention, maybe it won’t. Big recommendation for everyone that’s using this app or plans to in the future: get a regular bank account, goto a credit union near you or something. Because these online companies with no phone helpline is the nastiest business model ever. It feels as though I’m being purposely worn down to give up or something, extremely disheartening since I’ve had a fairly satisfactory relationship with them. Except I now have TWO email threads with at LEAST TWENTY messages back and forth of ai generated responses. In 2020 or 2021, I decided to open a step account, so I was about 14 or 15 years old. I wanted to manage my money and just have a place to store them. But later I learned that step also worked as a credit card (so a debit card and a credit card in one), intrigued I decided to keep using it. 2/3 years later, I got a notification saying that I’ll be able to opt in to send my information to credit bureaus so that I could get my credit score, but I’ll have to be 18. So I waited, and this year I turned 18. 30 days after my birthday and I finally got my credit score. My score was… 772 Yes, you read that right. Honestly, I was happy but I was a bit suspicious thinking maybe that score was not real. Like I literally had a higher credit score than my mom … Until I opened a capital one account (yes I cheated on you step 😭) and seen my score was actually 773. I’m still in shock cause the app I opened at 14/15 just for the fun of it is literally helping me grow financially right in front of my eyes. Moral of the story, if you’re a parent that love their child and want to have their best interest at heart financially, open a step account, there’s no risk and you won’t regret it!! Or if you’re an adult and just want to increase your credit without the risk of forgetting to pay your credit card, this is for you. Also, the chat agents have been so helpful since the first day I opened this app to now.
