## Symphony Pro Description
Symphony Pro 6 is a complete and intuitive app for writing music notation on iPad. It allows you to compose music for just about any size ensemble, from piano, symphonies, band, lead sheets, chord charts, guitar tabs, and more.

Starting Version 5, Symphony Pro now offers handwriting recognition as the only in-app purchase: Perfect with Apple Pencil, and works great with touch or capacitive stylus

GETTING STARTED 

SP provides all of the key options to begin your work. Import a score via MusicXML, MXL, MIDI, or SP file from your computer, or from apps like Dropbox, Mail, iCloud Drive, or Safari. You can base your project on a template, or start a blank score and add additional parts later. 

EDITING

To add notes, choose Pencil mode, and tap anywhere on a bar to begin editing right away. You can quickly specify note properties before or after placing notes. By switching to Select mode with one touch, you can also transpose, erase, cut, and paste multiple notes/tracks.

With an on-screen instrument, a QWERTY keyboard, or Core MIDI compatible keyboard, you can quickly enter notes & chords in step entry mode. Record a part in real-time with on-screen instruments to transcribe into notation.

Versions 4 & 5 take greater advantage of the iPad touchscreen. With shortcuts and contextual menus to edit note & bar properties, many of the commonly used editing commands are right at your fingertips.

SP supports a wide range of notational elements for your composition. Including dynamics & articulations, time & key signature changes, clef changes, pedals, and repeat conventions. Edit chord symbols, lyrics, and annotations using the iPad’s standard keyboard. 

EXPORT & SHARE

When you’re finished, print out your score with AirPrint, or export it as a PDF, MusicXML, AAC, MIDI, or Symphony file. Share files via email or directly to another computer or iPad via Dropbox/iCloud Drive.

It takes a while to learn where all the functions are hidden, but once learn’t it does a great job. I have written and rewritten 100’s of tunes with this app. with lyrics for piano and keyboard in various formats (lead sheets, two clefs etc). It has many other standard formats which can be adjusted to suit. It has many functions I have not used. The print function is good and I can send a pdf copy to other apps. Symphony Pro has a great transposing function. It has a good playback function. The app is continually improving and if you don’t need too many strange requirements then this is a great app.

### ***-- "JUST A FEW ISSUES!"
Seriously, I have been using this application for a couple of years now. Essentially I am very happy with it but there are a few shortcomings.

Firstly, there does not seem to be the ability to enter grace notes (appoggiatura) into a triplet embedded nest. Yes, you can add a grace note to the leading note of a triplet but not within the triplet itself.

Secondly when doing a cut-and-paste from one instrument to another, everything is transposed, except the grace notes, which maintain their initial notation after the paste….

### ****- "Great promise but some minor issues"
I’ve really been enjoying using SP6 with Apple Pencil support. It makes sketching ideas a breeze, but I have hit a few annoyances that I hope can be addressed in an update.

The main issue I’m facing at the moment is with ties and swing. I can reliably reproduce the problem with the following steps: 1) start a new project, 2) add a half note, dotted quarter note, and an eighth note to bar 1, 3) add an eighth note to bar 2 and tie the two eighth notes across bars 1 & 2.

Hit play and the tie works as expected. Now go to the menu > master track and set swing to medium and hit play again. Now the tie no longer works and two eighth notes are played. Resetting the swing to straight does not fix the issue and any further ties added to the score do not work.

Really hope you can fix this soon as not being able to do playback with swing makes working on jazz pieces limited.

Imagine creating such a powerful music software, more intuitive than Sibelius (minus the orchestral sound libraries) but making the Apple Pencil feature cost a ridiculous $22.99AUD. The only reason I wouldn’t just write music in Sibelius is because of the convenience and efficiency of writing with stylus, but the hefty price puts it out of reach for many people such as students.

Honestly, this app has a lot of great ideas but lacks some key features. If the developers could allow touch input to be disabled in handwriting mode when using the Apple Pencil (or allow a setting to be change to make it like that), it would fix 90% of the problems. Handwriting recognition is fantastic (except I had some trouble with quarter note triplets), but the experience could be so much better if the screen didn’t randomly move around or if random dots weren’t drawn when touch input gets interpreted as a drawing input. The two finger drag to move the screen would not be necessary if you could disable handwriting with the finger. Palm blocking definitely needs some work though. I really hope the developers can tidy these things up as it would greatly improve my rating.

I love that there is a help menu while I’m trying to learn this incredibly fiddly (yet awesome) program, but it would be so useful if the search function works for more than just the submenus. 

I’m having a difficult time finding simple answers to frustratingly simple things - for example, my whole song has muted itself from what seemed like an accidental slip of the wrist (or a misreading of a tap, because my dumb phone often decides to flick in and out of portrait mode while I’m rolling around on the floor) and I can’t figure out how to get it back to normal.

I have to agree with Harry. The idea is great, but execution is poor. I’ve been trying to get the hang of charting using the Apple Pencil, and it’s as twitchy as all get out. The whole pencil versus pointer modes seem hopelessly confused. I keep getting random articulations like staccato when I don’t want them. And it is super annoying that I can’t cross out something with the pencil. Some gestures have absurd sensitivity - I can’t calibrate my use of the pencil to figure out the overly fine difference between taps that select a not and taps that select a region. The whole thing is a frustrating kinaesthetic guessing game. After days of practice it can still take me over a minute to get one note as I want it. I don’t think the developers are using a broad enough testing group. Or even making sure they always test on completely novice users - they are supposed to be emulating a pencil after all. The expectation that we should not have to re-learn how to write on a staff with a pencil is not unreasonable.

### ****- "Great program, but the touchscreen is very sensitive!"
I have used Sibelius and Musescore, but can’t compare because Symphony Pro is on my iPad, and the other ones on a computer. But so far so good, and it has many excellent functions! The one big downside for me is the touchscreen is very sensitive, and I am always inadvertently changing work which is finished, as I navigate around the score, or edit other stuff. How to protect completed sections? Is there a button?

The bones are there for a good app but writing with Apple Pencil is a terrible experience. 
It’s like it has a ,ind of its own with the screen jumping around and inputting random stuff and misses basic notation things like staccato or slurs.

Copy paste is clumsy and complicated as is most of the user interface.

I’d really like my money back. This app doesn’t deliver on the promise. 

If this was any other product I the Australian market I could get a refund as its not fit for purpose.

A nice easy to use app. When I say easy to use, I mean really easy to use. I've used Symphony Pro for a few years no and it's really improved over the years - extra functionality and usability that makes it really nice to use. I mainly do vocal four part arrangements and adding tracks and lyrics is a breeze. Would be good if there was the option for vocal tracks but most things you can work around.
