Tandem took me from having basic vocabulary to being conversational in Spanish and somehow a bit of Portuguese. Took a break but now I discovered the party feature which makes it even more valuable. I used to pay for the in app translation and now I’ll pay for unlimited parties so I’m glad they keep finding ways to add value.
This app, when I first started using it was fantastic for connecting with people at a time when I lived in Canada and wanted to learn Italian. I even paid for the pro version to translate infinite messages. Now I’ve come back to using this app a year later (but no longer pay for the pro version) and it is completely unusable. Every time I click anything, it immediately serves me an ad. Even if I am just looking at profiles to find a suitable language partner, every click of a profile—advertisement! It’s ridiculous. I spend more time waiting for ads to finish, than actually accomplishing anything.
The whole app is just Chinese and brown dudes who are pedophiles lol. The rest is just poor Russian scammers who are probably trafficked.
Not So Bad
I’d rather not share my face like it’s a dating app… I downloaded this app to share and meet people who also want to learn languages, this doesn’t make sense. This is going to put off people who are introverted or don’t want to display their face publicly online. Also female/male are the only genders available…

I am discouraged because I lost my old profile from Tandem and therefore lost my friends I made last year - is there a way to recuperate this?
I used to LOVE using tandem it’s literally the best app to learn new languages or practice AND at the same time make new friends, but recently I can’t even click on some ones profile without getting a freaking ad, and I find I’d really unfortunate since I don’t want to use it anymore even though it’s a great app you know :(
I used to enjoy this app as a great way to practice languages and chat with natives. Sadly it has been ruined by constant ads when searching for people to talk with.
They have now introduced a 90 minute daily limit which prevents me from joining parties even on days that I hadn’t opened the app. There’s another bug that just says something went wrong and kicks you out of a party after tapping ok 😆
