Der Abbau von organischer Substanz im Boden ist Teil des globalen Kohlenstoffkreislaufs, der Aufschluss über die biologische Aktivität des Bodens gibt und daher für den Klimawandel wichtig ist. Veränderungen des Kohlenstoffgehalts im Boden können den Klimawandel sowohl verstärken als auch mildern. Die Citizen Scientists können aus 3 Aktivitäten wählen: 1) grundlegende Bodenbeobachtungen durch Erfassung von Bodenfarbe, Bodenleben und Landnutzung, 2) Bodenbeobachtungen durch Untersuchung der Bodentextur mithilfe der Fingerprobe und Spatenprobe, 3) TBI. Der TBI erfasst die Abbauraten von vergrabenen Teebeuteln (Grüntee und Rooibos) innerhalb von 3 Monaten nach einem standardisierten Verfahren. Die Methode kann ganz einfach von Citizen Scientists wie z.B. SchülerInnen, durchgeführt werden. Die gesammelten Daten werden an die Datenbank des „Global Tea Bag Index Network“ (www.teatime4science.org) übermittelt. Schulen können die TBI App ganz einfach in ihren Lehrplan aufnehmen. Lehrmaterialien (Bodenbeobachtung mit allen Sinnen, Spatentest, Bodentextur mit der Fingerprobe, TBI) in der App erweitern das Wissen der SchülerInnen über den Boden und den globalen Kohlenstoffkreislauf. Die Tea Bag Index App wird zu einer starken Verbindung zwischen Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft beitragen, indem sie jede der Aktivitätskategorien mit den Zielen der nachhaltigen Entwicklung (SDGs) verbindet.
