Textastic Code Editor Reviews
Great, but still not the best editor I have ever seen
That editor is the best editor on iPad I have ever seen. One of the biggest pluses of the Textastic is option of operating in folders, a lot of supported language and great theme. Textastic is smooth too.
Anyway I would love to see here Intellisense.
Unusable
Bigger files with some non-broken lines? Top performance iPad Pro 11 just freezees. In addition, even if the file is handled in a way not freezing my iPad (still, naming it „smooth” would be a lie...), there is an invisible barrier limiting me from scrolling below some point in a file. An invisible file size limit. What the hell?
This completely disqualifies the software for my purporses.
Good for starters in HTML
While I like it and use it (and nothing really compares to this app on iOS, trust me), there're couple of things I really miss or would love to have:
1. syntax autocomplete – just like emmet cheat sheet, which is great, but at least for:
1.1. CSS property values (and justify-content property -> I don't know why it doesn't appear on the list..)
1.2. if I have i.e. an already defined class -> an autofill option while writing in HTML
1.3. at least in .css files -> when I type a selector and press tab to automatically add {} brackets with one empty line between them and indentation
2. symbols list including HTML class values and [attributes]
3. option to see additional keys only if I'm currently using the software keyboard
4. keyboard shortcut to easily comment out code (e.g. cmd + / )
5. option to define my own snippets despite emmet library, system shortcuts, and TextExpander
6. possibility to copy files (like images) to the Textastic folder using Files app. Right now it is impossible and I can only add photos to project folders by either importing them in .zip files or importing from Photos app, which is very slow
7. an option to see the RGB/RGBA/HSL/etc. color in a tooltip or somewhere else when the text cursor is on the code, e.g. hex code
8. an option to highlight/mark the open and close tags, when editing html file -> especially useful when there's a lot of content inside
8.1. additionally, if the open tag is missing a closing tag, mark it in red/other visible color, e.g. where the line number is displayed
9. ability to confirm (e.g. when creating a new file/folder/etc.) by tapping enter/return button on a physical keyboard
10. ability to go to next/previous result in "find/replace" function (e.g. by enter/return and shift+enter/return)
Bardzo dobra aplikacja
Jestem niesamowicie zadowolony z tej aplikacji. Jest dopracowana i przyjemna w obsludze. Podobaja mi sie jej interfejs i styl wyswietlania kodu. Uzywam jej glownie do przegladania moich kodow, bo w tej aplikacji jest dla mnie bardziej czytelny.
My favourite app on iPad Pro 12,9
Textastic is definitely my favourite app on my iPad Pro 12,9". Last update fixed problem with firebug and now it's working properly. Emmet.io is amazing and make me write faster. Shortcuts for keyboards working as well. It is super combo using WorkingCopy (github) and my own server with it. I recommend it for JavaScript Developers on the run. My wishes list for next updates: auto closing symbols like "", {}, (), divs, itd., autocompletion for own function names, 2 columns editor for 12,9" users (faster html positioning with css) and my big dream: airplay integration. It would be amazing to connect iPad via airplay to tv and code from it on tv. Textastic is a piece of great job.
Never underestimate how important a plain text file can be
When using an iPad Pro as a laptop this app comes in handy. Great for coding with its integration with other Git applications and even for saving plain text files to share between devices. The ability to connect to and edit files over SSH is something you won’t find in a typical text editor. Great for developers and everyday users alike. Been using it on all my iOS and iPadOS devices for years now.
YAY!
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but JESUS CHRIST is coding easier than I thought on mobile. I’ve been working on the huge project (literally every wakening second of my life) and being able to work on my phone is a godsend. I bought Textastic with the impression of “oh, god…”, but I instead got “yay!” Even transferring files between my Mac and my phone was easy. I thought I would have to lug a flash drive with me, but—nope—Textastic has WebDAV ‘n’ stuff built in. The only negative thing I can come up with is that there isn’t syntax error detection, but considering I did a lot of my coding in TextEdit, I’m used to that already. Thank you!
Makes coding simple on the iPad
I spent a long time looking for a good SSH client and text editor for the iPad and was resigned to using sub-par products until I found Textastic. I use it mostly with an iPad Pro, external keyboard, and mouse and it's easier to do coding via SSH on my iPad now than my desktop. I love that I can write markdown, HTML, CSS, Python, or YAML and Textastic handles them all. Even when I don't have my keyboard with me, I am not left without essential keys (hello, esc anyone?) that can be hard to find on the built-in virtual keyboard. Plus function keys!!! OMG. I even use it to write files to Obsidian (markdown) when I'm working and don't want to switch apps. Textastic is super versatile and the developer keeps on making improvements, so it's just getting better. Plus, it's not a subscription and they don't track you or invade your privacy. This is the best text editor on the iPad BAR NONE.
Great App for those that want to creat HTML documents or a dozen other formats.
Still true. You can't beat it. Provides everything you need. Absolutely the best kind of software.
