The Atlantic Magazine Reviews

Ads everywhere

Griffin18 on

Australia

I can’t believe a paid news subscription still includes AdSense ads. What a horrible impact on user experience for a few extra cents per month in revenue. Just increase the subscription price and get rid of them. Amazing journalism ruined by penny grabbing.

App only partly downloading stories

Catherine Mansfield on

Australia

I’ve been a subscriber for years and always used the app to read it. Lately, however, the app only downloads the first few paragraphs of each story. I can read the whole article if I go in via the website and my subscription is current. This problem is amplified by The Atlantic having absolutely no place where I can ask them how to fix it. The Help Centre does not cover this problem and there is no place to override the FAQ. Yes, I have deleted and reinstalled the app. 😫😫

Decent app and good journalism

Jtunes123124123 on

App works nicely and isn’t overloaded with annoying features like some.

Clunky

Catherine Mansfield on

Australia

Great journalism but unsophisticated app technology that relies too much on being ‘just like the magazine’.

Heavy use of ads even for subscribers

Anatole GH on

Australia

Have been an Atlantic digital subscriber for many years. I recently bought a tablet and, upon using it over The Atlantic, was appalled by its heavy use of ads. Makes reading a most unpleasant experience. I immediately deleted the app.

The app is good but could be better

ribbyramone on

I don’t know if there are any other ways to communicate with the app developers or not so I’m using this one. The quality of journalism in the Atlantic is absolutely superb yet the app has some areas for improvement. The feature I’d really like to see is the one the “Foreign Affairs” app has. When the article is a particularly long read, it often might take 2 or 3 sittings to fully finish it. I’d really like you to implement the feature that would reopen the app at the exactly same location on the page before I left it. The aforementioned app has it and I LOVE it and I’m sure many of your readers would agree with me! Thanks for your work!

Excellent writing, app could be better

SilentRedgum on

Australia

I love the journalism of The Atlantic. I don’t love the app as much though. It forgot that I’m a subscriber when my subscription renewed, and my access to articles stopped. Restoring purchases failed so I had to delete the app and reinstall. I’m told by customer support this could happen each time my subscription is renewed, so this seems to be a bug that should be fixed. I agree with other reviews about the wasted space on the Latest tab, and the bafflingly huge greeting graphic on the Today tab. I also don’t understand why there are blank ad containers taking up so much (any, in fact) space on the Latest tab between article headers. I’m happy to pay for quality journalism, and I think the app user experience should match the high level achieved by the writing.

Where is the search function?

pctcraig on

Australia

High quality journalism but an app that leaves much to be desired. Most importantly where is the search function? I had to go to Google to find Caitlin Flanagan’s last piece. Why can’t I find it in the app? There is a comment from 10 months ago from a developer saying they are working on it. Please add that function.

Poor use of screen real estate.

Eneerhut on

Australia

Excellent journalism, but the app does a very poor job helping me find it. When I open the app, I see ‘Good afternoon’, an image, and not a single article until I scroll down further. Almost as if the app was designed exclusively for a nursing home and/or vision impaired audience. As I scroll, the entire screen real estate of my iPad is used to show just one article at a time. If I go to ‘Latest’, I am shown three articles at a time, with a huge amount of white space in between. This app makes it very time consuming to get a cross section of the latest journalism from The Atlantic. That’s a real shame. Another major frustration I have is that the app loses my place in an article and takes me back to the start if I rotate between portrait and landscape. This is a major annoyance on a long article where you find yourself trying to get back to where you were. Top quality journalism, but the app UI/UX needs an overhaul.
