“This app is home to the best journalism in the world. If I could only afford to pay for one news source, The Economist would be that source.”
“Great app, excellent journalism! The Economist is wonderful. The content is interesting and relevant and the reporting is superlative. Equally impressive is the drive to stay relevant by presenting media in multiple formats, from print to podcasts and short videos.”
“Impeccable journalism with an app to match. The Economist doesn’t need my endorsement of the quality of their journalism. It speaks for itself. Rather, I’ll comment that their app is well-designed and refreshing to use…I love being able to easily download entire editions, listen to articles with real narrators and search for past articles.”

The Economist Reviews

Poor user experience

Robyn1990Williams on

South Africa

App crashes frequently. Search function doesn’t work reliably. App hangs

Will they ever fix this app

Mih55 on

South Africa

The Economist is a wonderful magazine. This app is a travesty. Slow opening, sticky page transitions … the worst performing app in my collection. Surely someone can fix it !?

Good reporting - buggy app

GDA123456789 on

South Africa

For a publication so often concerned with technology trends, it should show more care to its own app. Slow and often crashes.

Great news, dreadful app

Bryn Barker on

South Africa

It’s absurd to rate an app based on how you feel about its news coverage. That has nothing to do with the technical quality of the app. Unfortunately, this app has gone from passable to poor in recent months. It’s very sluggish on my iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPad Air 5. The implementation of state preservation and state restoration is borderline nonexistent, which means when you return to an article after a few minutes the entire app refreshes and takes you to the homepage. Considering how costly The Economist is, the number of ads is unacceptable. My main gripe is how slow the app is. It’s unpleasant to use and is one of the lowest quality apps I’ve come across from a major news organisation. I expect better from The Economist.

Glitchy app

Raj789sa on

South Africa

The app is quite glitchy recently. Articles take long to load, and the app shuts down on its own occasionally. Feels like the app needs to be re-engineered to handle all the data it’s trying to manage and access.

Slow UI

Adam 9001 on

South Africa

Great newspaper (no issue there), but The Economist App UI is terribly slow. Even pressing the play/pause button for audio articles creates a loading symbol! Running iOS 17 on and iPhone 13 so it shouldn’t be due to outdated software or old hardware. Please improve the app’s server connection or hardware integration. Thank you.

App lags and is slow

Recent updates to the app are really bad

Political Leanings

Hickles02 on

South Africa

I love the economist. But I do feel that it is leaning more left as time goes on. All the negative news for these past 6 months have all been regarding right wing politics, and I don’t believe the Economist is painting a picture of the other side. For a newspaper priding themselves on impartiality, this is not the way to go.

Agonisingly slow

Customer3000 on

South Africa

V3.26.00 is awful. So slow. Slow to open. Slow for content to load. Slow to respond to any click - app takes 5 - 10 seconds to react to a click on an article or any other navigation link.

Decisions in business and life need up-to-date context. The Economist provides this.
