The New Yorker Reviews

Battery drain

LucieVTV on

Czechia

The app drains so much battery it's almost impossible to use it on the go (I cannot finish a single longer article). A plea to developers, please do something about it. How can a text based app have such a high consumption of energy?

I subscribed through the Apple app and canceled and want my money back. Please credit my card. This is a terrible app that does not communicate with the New Yorker. Fix it!

STOP HIJACKING THE AUDIO

nellysisgone on

How does Apple permit a magazine app to turn off my the audio on my iPhone or iPad????? Stop it. I go to the New Yorker to read or do a puzzle. If I want to listen to music or a podcast, I should control that. Stop your app from hijacking the audio feed Update: Oct 1, 2024: For some reason the NYer app is now turning off my audio—whether it is music or a podcast—whenever I open the app. How is this permitted? Also why is this happening?? You’re a magazine that I pay for. Fix this. Update 9.0.1 broke the Top Stories tab instead of fixing it. Nothing updates. No new crossword puzzles. The app design team continues its wayward journey. Update Feb 2024: Top Stories is no different than the main feed used to be, except it is bidirectional (for some reason) and makes it harder to it seek out what you want. Please focus on something actually benefiting paying subscribers like Dark Mode or an option to substitute a Puzzles tab for the Audio tab (because I’m never going to listen to an article). Update Dec 2023: For as much as this subscription costs, the app should never crash because of the insane number of ads being loaded. iPhone version currently unusable. Please prioritize the app functionality instead of your data gathering. For a couple years, The New Yorker defined the best way for a magazine to adapt to the digital age, with a beautiful, useful app. That trend seems to be slipping away sadly as their concerns skew more toward what I can only assume are marketing/tracking efforts. Functionality (like trying to go backward out of an article) is getting hidden for what feels like someone’s idea of aesthetics, which is also presumably driving the maddening narrowing of the layout. I use an 11” iPad Pro, often in landscape, and to have the app now display large blank margins on both sides is infuriating. I want the app to take up the whole display. Readers use different screens. Don’t assume their is a bunch of space available. (People on iPad minis must be furious.) The app randomly logs you out after updates requiring re-authentication (which stinks when it decides to happen on a flight), which is definitely related to usage tracking.

It just works!

Unlike so many apps, the NYer app works 100% of the time without glitches or errors. I don’t know who wrote the app but they should run for President of the USA and “make this country a happy place again” (McHAP is the acronym for that). Obviously they know how to make things work well. An app today, a country tomorrow, and maybe, just maybe, the world!
