The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) helps plan outdoor photography shoots in natural light, particularly landscape and urban scenes. It's a map-centric Sun, Moon and Milky Way calculator: see how the light will fall on the land, day or night, for any location on earth.
Whether you need at-a-glance information on today's sun, moon and Milky Way data for your current location, or need to plan a precise alignment of the full moon for a future shoot, TPE has the tools you need. The combination of augmented reality, line-of-sight analysis and visual search supports the most sophisticated photo planning needs.
Night mode features a 3D representation of the Milky Way, pole stars and major constellations directly over the map, so you can easily visualise exactly how to align your shot.
Research and save your own list of favourite photographic locations, using seven different map types (including two offline maps) and save them in your locations list. Favourite locations are always displayed right there on the map.
Advanced features including visual sun and moon search, automatic time zone and elevation detection, correction for atmospheric refraction and height above the horizon, ensuring that you have the best possible information for planning your shoot.
You can even determine when the sun or moon will rise from behind nearby hills and mountains.
Key features:

I use TPE quite regularly when looking to set up golden hour or sunrise / sunset shots, especially when looking at locations other than home.

Great App!

I use TPE and her sister programs to plan every large landscape shot I take. It’s fantastic for choosing the right spot and the right time of year to get exactly the shot envisaged by the photographer. It’s also great for exploring shot concepts when time is limited and landing on those with the greatest chance of success. The time period indicators such as “Golden Hour” allows me to plan out leaving times from base camp and ensures I always have sufficient time to setup my shots ( I take a lot of HDR multi-position landscapes) I have just recently started Astrophotography and now also use TPE 3D in conjunction with this app for planning. Keep up the great work guys. Looking forward to seeing “Skyfire” for Australia and NewZealand!

Import and export of locations

Eat My Flamin Hat on

Why is it so difficult to import and export locations? Why do I have to “email” them to do this? Wouldn’t it be much easier if I could save the KML file to “Files”??? This handicap really spoils my enjoyment of TPE, I’m sorry to say!!

Feature rich, superb app

This is not just a tool to improve my photography. It's introduced me to a whole new way of understanding the world around me.

The right time and place, every time!

Ansel Adams is quoted as saying "A good photograph is knowing where to stand." With TPE I can get a very good idea of where and when I want to stand, and what I'll be able to see. I've been using the app for quite a while, and the latest version adds even more information on elevation and the visibility of astronomical bodies. In my opinion it is essential for landscape photography, and very easy to use. The ability to synchronize my locations between iPad and iPhone just improves the convenience even more. I recently had a technical problem with the app, which Stephen went to quite a bit of trouble to fix. Well done, for a great app and excellent service. If you're a photographer get TPE!

A great app for a keen photographer

I was a little sceptical at first then I bought the app and started using it. My experience of this app so far is nothing short of brilliant! I love it and I am always using it. It has helped me improve my photography with planning shoots and scouting locations. The app is easy to use and very handy for both sun and moon rise/set information. There is so much available data with his app depending on the level of detail the user is looking for. The email support from the developer is also as good as the app. My best app by far.
