Time Guru Metronome

Published by: Avi Bortnick

Description

Guitar Player Magazine says: "This ingenious super metronome was developed by funky-as-hell Sco sideman Avi Bortnick. It will leave out beats randomly to force you to strengthen your own inner time-keeping muscles, and it has other cool features for odd meters, drum machine-style patterns, and more... this is an awesome learning, grooving, solidifying tool."
Strengthen your inner sense of rhythm! Time Guru is the only metronome with the ability to mute its sound at random, in sequenced patterns, or both, so that you can assess whether you tend to rush or drag or loose your place with odd meters. Time Guru can periodically leave you on your own so that you strengthen your own internal sense of time, rather than relying on the constant, rigid, external time keeping of a metronome. It's like training wheels that sometimes come up off the ground.
Time Guru also features:
-the ability to play in different time signatures or sequences of time signatures
-create rhythmic drum-machine like patterns
-save presets for tempo, meter, sound and muting-
-35 loud sound sets;
-Human or robot voice counting in English, Chinese, French, German or Russian - great for teaching!
-tap tempo (5 to 300 BPM range)
-super accurate, rock-solid timing via a customized audio engine.
And of course it can function as a normal metronome.
NoTreble.com says: "I love the aesthetic and layout of Time Guru. It’s very simple and elegant. Time Guru also offers ability to set randomness of your subdivisions (great for testing your internal clock)….There is one thing that Time Guru does that I absolutely love, and for which, this app will always live on my iPhone – at the top of the screen, you will see a series of numbers (1-7). When you press a number, it is set first in a sequence and you can choose a subdivision that will then repeat that number of times (or set it to rest that number of times). Sound confusing? It isn’t, because the layout is so simple. Every time you press a new number, it is set next in the sequence and you choose your continue to choose your subdivisions."

Time Guru Metronome Reviews

Excellent

Used this for years, best metronome by a wide margin. Especially useful is random click mute. Would like to get support in the future for headset play/pause function and configurable click blink delay to compensate bluetooth audio latency.

Your brain needs this app’s mute mode

Woz2 on

I came here after seeing Molly Gebrian’s YouTube video about fMRI research on brain activity when 1) following a rhythm and 2) sustaining a rhythm oneself. Check it out to see why the mute mode of this app might help you be a better musician. “What musicians can learn about practicing from current brain research - part 3 - metronome use”

It’s fun!

I’m still a beginner, but this app is fun to use with its “random” feature! I would like to be able to see the time while using the app though.

Love it!

I use this metronome for its simplest function as a click track, but love the random feature in particular. My only change would be the ability to see the phone’s time, Wi-Fi, battery status line.

Waste of money

Not as functional as reported.

No delete function

I had heard about Time Guru from a friend, and I was very excited to use it. But now it is useless since I am unable to delete the tempos which I had set. I have double clicked on the beats, but it doesn’t do anything. Now it is a total waste.

simple and clean

okay the design is simple but what you can achieve with can be complex and endlessly useful. throw every other metronome app away

Simply the best

The best, most versatile metronome I’ve ever used. Been using it since 2013 and see no reason to try any other. Thank you!

Simple and Effective

This app is very simple and does exactly what you need it to do, which is to fix your internal sense of time. Practicing with a metronome is essential, but it becomes a crutch when the click never shuts off. Using this allows you to internalize your sense of time by automatically shutting off the sound of the click for a set duration. You can use this solo, or with fellow musicians. One of my favorite drills as a bassist is to loop a groove with a drummer and then work together with this app to see how long we can maintain steady time without click. It is so satisfying when you groove for 15 bars, turn the corner, and hear the click come right back in on one.

Really love the app
