Trope, designed by ambient pioneer Brian Eno and musician / software designer Peter Chilvers, expands further on the ideas introduced by Bloom, their acclaimed iPhone application. Darker in tone, Trope immerses users in endlessly evolving soundscapes created by tracing abstract shapes onto the screen, varying the tone with each movement.

Major flaw

Does not run in the background or when iPad is in sleep mode, so pretty useless as an ambient app. Foolish.

Perfect work music

I poopoo-ed this app when I first bought it many years ago. The interaction element didn’t gel with me. Now that I’m working from home during the coronavirus lockdown, I’m finding it perfect for creating ambient mood music to help with focus. I just turn it, click Listen and the textures evolve by themselves.

Beautiful

Somewhat more weighty and textural than Bloom, I use this for background atmosphere, creative work, relaxation and travel. I find generative music absolutely fascinating and the guys who made this have done well. Beautiful.

Updated review

For some reason the App would update and was giving me errors about iOS 11 incompatible but a hard reset has now updated and it no longer complains

Problem with update

Since updating I can only listen not create. Please could you address this?

Sublime

You need some space in your life. Some calm. Less bangs and crashes. More gentle flow. Trope provides this. It won't be for everyone. It's not Absolute Radio. But for those who need some peace this will do.

Eno

If you like Eno, you'll love it. Don't expect a drum kit.

Time for an update.

I agree with the reviewers comments about it's limitations. Feeling that its twenty-odd megabytes of iPhone memory that could be used for better things. I'd like to see a few of the ideas for improvements taken up by the developers.

Excellent app if you like Brian Eno and ambient music then this is for you. Compose your own Eno track. The only down side to all his apps you cant save your work. Need to bring a version that you can do just that Brian. Would have got give stars but for the save function not included.
