UE | BOOM Reviews

What happened this time?

When I first started using the Ultimate Ears Bluetooth speaker brand, I acquired a Megaboom 3. I loved it instantly and bought three more. Then, after a couple of years, came the HyperBoom! I was stoked about the sound quality, the sheer presence of a clear/clean soundstage, and the fact that I could “Party Up” with all my Booms and use them as a wireless surround sound or multi-room speaker setup. Having paid a whopping $250 for my HyperBoom, I was a bit miffed when “Partying Up” all my speakers because that terrific sound each Boom could produce on its own sounded horrendous, and the update on the app had injected numerous issues. The HyperBoom had now bumped up to $450 at Best Buy (due to the popularity of demos at the stores). Still, my biggest mistake was trying to fix this terrible, static-laden, non-EQ’able, horrific sound coming out of the big box that worked flawlessly for a few years by updating the UE | Boom software. All my custom settings for the EQ were still there, but the soundstage was hollow, flat, and empty, accompanied by a significant decrease in volume. Plus, the HyperBoom started turning off at random. This was frustrating, and I wrote an extensive review. For unknown reasons, this review was never published in the App Store. I am not sure if it was because I was speaking the truth about the app's problems and what it had done to all the time spent creating custom EQs. Maybe UE didn’t care about what the app did to their existing speakers that the “updated” app had ruined. The shiny, new Epic/EverBooms were the latest mean motor scooters on the block, and the new Bluetooth speakers worked great with the app. Nobody has ever answered what happened to the app or speakers after the updates to the UE|Boom were made. After reading numerous reviews reporting my findings, I prayed that UE would release an update to fix the UE|Boom app. Months went by, and speaker sound continued falling further into mediocrity when using the app, and my frustration finally reached the max. So, I returned to using my Bluetooth Marshall speakers(excellent tone, presence, and sound)! Shortly after, an update from UE came out, and I decided to try it. To my astonishment, it restored the wonderful sound from my HyperBoom. I'm not sure if your company can share what changes were made to regain this Lucious sound, but if you are able, please pass them on to your dev team. Well, now it appears that another update is on the loose. Until I actually see po

No Spotify One Touch support?

Just changed over to apple and have been pretty frustrated that’s there’s no one touch function for Spotify from the magic button. Hope this can be added soon!!!

Useless

You shouldn't have to download an app to use a Bluetooth speaker. It's unnecessary and annoying. It made a nice gift feel like work.

Useful companion & Quick connectivity

Michaelsav26 on

United States

UI is clean and easy to see. It connects to the speaker very quickly and the EQ controls are easy to dial in. Once you get the EQ set how you would like you don’t need to change that much but you can still use the app to power it on and check the battery. Haven’t been able to try the party mode though.

Buggy

This latest (iPad) version crashes after I connect to my 2 speakers and then select one of them to join them together in stereo. Bummer.

Accessibility Is Seriously Lacking

Igor0128 on

I've had a Megaboom 3 for a few years now and when I first started using the app, I immediately noticed how bad the interface is for VoiceOver users. The tabs at the bottom are not labeled, the settings button at the top right of the screen is also unlabeled. Most egregiously, the alarms section is completely inaccessible. When I try double-tapping on it to set an alarm, nothing happens. This app needs serious work!

Doesn't work.

I'm connected to the speaker, but the app doesn't recognize that, I can't get past the instructions screen. All I want to do is disable the extremely loud startup sound which the app should allow if it ever recognizes the connection. Absolutely infuriating.

This app’s frequent crashes are making me regret buying UE products

I bought BOOM speakers for my house to be able to play music in multiple rooms. The app worked great for that for awhile and then started crashing EVERY time I try and use it. Deleting and redownloading (as well as other standard trouble shooting actions) don’t help. So now every party has music in only one room and I have useless speakers I paid for in the other rooms.

Turns off automatically midsong

Jeff Corino on

United States

Since I've purchased this Boom from Ultimate Ears, it continues to turn off in mid song and nobody seems to know the answer. The quick start sheet that comes with it indicates many features, but on my app, it indicates only how to get it up and running, and it stops there. I've checked several times to see if I made a mistake or overlooked something, but I have not. For a simple speaker that should be plug and play, there's a lot of complications with this at a high price and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Especially if you don't like reading endless instructions that don't make sense.
