It’s just annoying
For you to be able to write you have to pay and that’s just stupid also I can’t delete it for some reason I’m sure it’s good to write with when you pay but I’m not doing that 0/10

Came from scrivener because Ulysses feels much smoother with iOS and macOS syncing. It’s got a clean and pretty design and the minimal aesthetic means I don’t waste time messing around with formatting like other writing software.
Ulysses is a good app for writers but I think it needs improvement. For instance, there are two different ways to find text, and one rather obscure way to replace text in the chapter you’re working on. But I can’t figure out how to do a global find and replace. This should be simple and obvious, but isn’t. Second, the help files. If you search help for find and replace, you’ll get every instance of the words find, and, and replace. You then have to search hundreds of different possibilities hoping to find what you need. Third, Ulysses uses markdown instead of WYSIWYG for text highlighting. I know markdown is cool and trendy, and it has excellent uses for coding and other specialty areas, but I can’t see its advantage in writing, and it has some drawbacks. I continue to use Ulysses anyway because it's well structured for writing a novel or other long work with text that has a lot of divisions such as chapters that you need to jump around in from one to the next.
I just like how clean and distraction free this Ulysses is. I can’t imagine writing without it. And there’s even built-in grammar and style check so I no longer have to use other services for that. My only complaint is that I wish there were more alternative icons that weren’t just re-colours. Hope to see that as an option soon.
Thank you for adding latex and making mathematically writing less of a chore for the everyday Scientific writer. For years I had to utilize latex for writing papers, just to have equations. No more are the days of choosing between markdown for writing, and latex for equations. Now I can finally have both! Thank you Ulysses for bring the best of both worlds together.
Can’t do it it anymore
I’ve tried Scrivener and others, and settled on Ulysses as my ‘go to’ app for writing because it’s deceptively simple. I love it’s ease of use and exceptional interaction between iOS and MacOS - with seamless syncing between my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air. If you are an Apple fan with more than one device, THIS is the writing app for you - no question. The more I use Ulysses, the more features present themselves - it truly is a very powerful writing tool that’s also great for outlining and building a research library. It’s much ‘cleaner’ and less complex than apps like Scrivener, making it way easier to stay focused and do what was the intended objective in the first place - to simply write!
I’m sure the app itself and programs are fine, but for someone who just wants to write on their phone and doesn’t want to use the notes app, this is ridiculous. You can get a 7 day free trial but that’s it. No free version with premium options, nothing. Literally the notes is free and all these writing apps are fancy for nothing. I’m going back to notes.
Good day. I am a seasoned novelist with six under my belt on Kobo. My latest is ‘Two Summers.’ I wish I had discovered Ulysses years ago. It is just what I have been wishing for. What attracts me is the tutorial uses words like ‘for writers,’ and ‘iPad.’ It truly is built for writers, from the ground up. I am using it as my ‘go-to’ text editor for my next novel. There are many tools included that I like about Ulysses. But what certainly stands out for me are the following three: 1) Focus on one paragraph. I am always trying to write in the present tense. Using Focus helps considerably to achieve this goal; 2) The ability to move pages around. Writing a novel sequentially from beginning to end is not my style. I think in scenes and never in the correct order. And, 3) Having the ability to do my heavy writing on my iPad and then bring up my text during the day on my iPhone 7+ as aspects come to mind is a true God send. Would I recommend Ulysses? Absolutely. No question. ~BrianWestbrook
