It premiered in the exhibition "Programmed: Rules, Codes, and Choreographies in Art, 1965–2018," from September 28, 2018 - April 14, 2019. To experience it, download the „Unexpected Growth“ app to your own smartphone, go onto the Whitney Museum 6th floor terrace and look around the terrace in the display of this app. You will find yourself surrounded by a coral reef, as if the sea water levels have risen to inundate the entire Whitney Museum under water. Occasional waves seem to sweep the corals back and forth - they have become mobile, to better respond to changing climate conditions. In nature, many corals are self-similar structures following simple, repetitive rules of growth, which can often be described as mathematical „Lindenmayer systems.“ Here, you can see that the corals are forming these Lindenmayer systems out of plastic waste. Is this our future, as plastic waste becomes more numerous than the fish in the sea? Construction and use of smartphones is also a factor contributing to global climate change. As more and more visitors view the corals at the Whitney, their colors slowly bleach to white. Only after many hours of rest from the mediated human gaze will the corals regain their vibrant colors. ## Unexpected Growth Screenshots - [Screenshot 1](https://is1-ssl.mzstatic.com/image/thumb/Purple126/v4/6d/bc/c3/6dbcc3e0-f07b-1663-f321-8e9eb4995eb9/93f3e9c2-5139-4f73-912a-800f4393265f_IPhone-1-2688x1242.png/2688x1242.png) ## Unexpected Growth Rating Breakdown in United States - 5 stars: 6 (75%) - 4 stars: 0 (0%) - 3 stars: 1 (13%) - 2 stars: 1 (13%) - 1 stars: 0 (0%) ## Unexpected Growth Reviews in United States ### ***** "Beautiful use of AR" One of the most creative AR uses and beautifully expressive (but, yeah, damning). The app worked even when I got home in upstate NY (3hrs from Manhattan) and one other time I believe. Turned location service and data on for the app today and it’s gone. It’s been more than a year since I used the app though. Bummer. What a great project to show friends. -- Marimic7, 2020-10-02 ### ***** "Beautiful and damning" Beautiful, colourful augmented reality underwater organisms are, on closer inspection, made of our discarded plastic. Go at different times to see the “coral” bleach out. -- Jane5984, 2019-02-18 ### ***-- "Be aware..." ...this application is useful only on the 6th floor of the Whitney museum; elsewhere it does nothing but maintain access to your location and camera. -- Closet0taku, 2018-12-23 [View all Unexpected Growth reviews and detailed analytics on AppTail](https://app.apptail.io/signup?utm_campaign=ai-crawl&utm_content=reviews) ## Apps Similar to Unexpected Growth - [kin_](https://apptail.io/app/kin-yzpb/united-states) - [ELEMENTO](https://apptail.io/app/elemento-tZod/united-states) - [Jellyfish AR/VR 2](https://apptail.io/app/jellyfish-arvr-2-FCNd/united-states) - [lgOpre](https://apptail.io/app/lgopre-tvoe/united-states) - [Dreaming Mind AR](https://apptail.io/app/dreaming-mind-ar-hXtf/united-states) - [Fragale](https://apptail.io/app/fragale-zDuf/united-states) - [Clypsy](https://apptail.io/app/clypsy-Fyxf/united-states) - [SENSUS ART](https://apptail.io/app/sensus-art-mBlj/united-states) - [Under the Bay](https://apptail.io/app/under-the-bay-hmxl/united-states) - [The Sound Garden: Out of Sight](https://apptail.io/app/the-sound-garden-out-of-sight-ocIn/united-states) ## Unexpected Growth Available In - [United States](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/united-states) - [Switzerland](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/switzerland) - [Belgium](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/belgium) - [China](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/china) - [Colombia](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/colombia) - [Germany](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/germany) - [Denmark](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/denmark) - [Algeria](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/algeria) - [France](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/france) - [Indonesia](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/indonesia) - [India](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/india) - [Iceland](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/iceland) - [Japan](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/japan) - [Kuwait](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/kuwait) - [Kazakhstan](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/kazakhstan) - [Lebanon](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/lebanon) - [Lithuania](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/lithuania) - [Mexico](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/mexico) - [Netherlands](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/netherlands) - [Norway](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/norway) - [Saudi Arabia](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/saudi-arabia) - [Singapore](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/singapore) - [Türkiye](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/turkey) - [Taiwan](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/taiwan) - [Ukraine](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/ukraine) - [United Arab Emirates](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/united-arab-emirates) - [Vietnam](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/vietnam) - [Argentina](https://apptail.io/app/unexpected-growth-Cnee/argentina) --- ## About AppTail [AppTail](https://apptail.io) is a mobile app intelligence platform providing app analytics, ASO (App Store Optimization) tools, keyword tracking, competitor analysis, revenue estimates, and review monitoring for iOS App Store apps.
