## Value Study Description
In art, value (or tone) refers to how light or dark a colour is. If you're learning to paint or draw, doing value studies is one of the best ways to improve. These small, loose sketches in greyscale help you understand where shadows fall and highlights appear—essential for capturing depth and form.

Value Study is a simple, focused tool designed to help you see values more clearly in your reference images. Instead of just converting a photo to black and white, this app lets you break down tones step by step. Start with just black and white to map out the biggest shapes, then gradually add more values to refine your understanding.

You can also highlight all areas of an image that share the same value, making it easier to see subtle shifts in tone. This is especially useful in complex references, like portraits, where different parts of the image might have the same level of shadow but look completely different in colour.

Value Study isn’t here to replace traditional studies—it’s here to enhance them. Whether you're sketching, painting, or working digitally, this tool makes it easier to focus on the fundamentals of light, shadow, and form.

Try it for free with all features enabled on sample images from Unsplash before deciding to unlock the full app with a low-cost yearly or lifetime purchase. All Value Study Pro upgrades count as lifetime purchase. Either option will unlock Value Study across iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Annual: Auto-renews yearly.
Lifetime: One-time payment, no fees.

## Value Study Reviews in United States

### ***** "Diem Ltd = Committed and Perseveres. Try it, Buy it."
I may be like you, I am a very discriminating app downloader. Initially, I used this app to - try, and moved forward through iOS devices only, to
purchasing lifetime, to
sharing it as my drawing friends must try, and
through multiple quick helpful chats with the creator, to
use now - on my OS mac desktop.

Shane is the best and each version is a blessing. My favorite new feature is Simplify Shapes.

Try it. Preview before purchase.
Mac, iPhone, and iPad apps
-- r_screenname, 2024-12-31

### ****- "Needs an information section"
Like the app so far excited to use it more, but i had to search the internet for descriptions of what the heck all my icons were at the bottom of the screen. And also a small explanation of how to read the value scales because the green highlight threw me for a bit of a loop. as a amateur looking to expand my art skills this app is going to be super helpful but a “how to”/ tool description section would helpful.
-- Biggestiveyfan!!, 2024-12-29

### ***** "Very Helpful"
Thank you, I use this tool when I need help to sort out certain values. It’s very helpful when working with values 4 5 6. I often have trouble with these.
-- Mar Mickey, 2024-11-27

### **--- "Repurchase?"
I already purchased this app and now I’m being asked to purchase it again. Is there a reason?
-- Wd69m, 2024-11-21

### ***** "Nice little app"
I use it to plan woodblock prints. Wish you could add an additional color so you can have two shades in different colors
-- Catcherzw, 2024-11-05

### ***** "Very useful"
This is great for identifying values and shapes.
-- Pagabala, 2024-10-31

### ***** "Wonderful Tool!"
This is more helpful than simply going by the use of a black and white photo because it makes a distinction between value without the ambiguity of seeing an area blended. Simple to use. Thanks.
-- Albert's garden, 2024-10-28

### ***** "FINALLY!!!!! THIS!!!"
I’ve been looking for YEARS for this exact type of app.

Learning how to paint.
Needed this for so long.
-- uffevubi, 2024-10-26

### ***** "See values more clearly!"
Great tool to improve your art - to make backgrounds set back and foreground (or focal point) move up. Other interesting tools too - you won’t regret it!
-- Judym_lc, 2024-10-20

### *---- "Must pay to use app"
Just change the app's price on the store; very misleading. Subscription-based for $0.99 annually or $4.99 lifetime. Can't say if it's worth it or not as you're unable to do anything except view their examples after seeing it's all under paywall. Sticking to editing on the my phone instead of experimenting I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
