Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag.
It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and allows videos to play in the background when set to audio-only quality.
Note: The phrase 'can read and alter webpages' in the permissions section is just an unfortunate choice of words. Vinegar needs access to the webpage to find the YouTube player and replace it. It's not doing anything creepy!
(Also, do check out Vinegar's companion app, Baking Soda. It's essentially a less powerful version of Vinegar, but it works on all websites except YouTube.)

Better than excellent
Long story short: I used browser YouTube on my iPad to get Picture in Picture
The YouTube browser player is extremely buggy for iPad.
I found this extension and it fixed my bugs AND removed all the ads.
Would rather pay YouTube premium price to you than to YouTube…
Getting worse every update
For the price I can’t complain much. But for those expecting all the functions to work headache free as advertised this is not it.
Worked pretty well the first time I bought the app but generally the minimize and ad skipping function has been getting worse.
Popular videos won’t enter full screen and dubbed language versions are forced onto the viewer (usually channels with million subs). Backgrounding takes multiple attempts before working and many videos require multiple refresh or use of secondary ad blocker to play.
There is only so much a small developer can do against YouTube’s army of engineers so it is understandable that they are losing this battle.
Amazing
Well worth the money. Although not perfect, it works great even after youtube started purging adblockers. The developer tries to stay on top of it all and i still recommend it to everybody that wants to watch youtube videos ad free.
Not working well
Since your latest updates to block ads some videos takes a long time to even be viewable, like 30 seconds. And some videos doesn’t even load so you have to refresh and start over. The video also needs to be rewinded, sometimes multiple minutes.
Is there something in the pipeline to combat this or is this just how it will work from now on?
Amazing but can be godlike
This is soooo good already I feel bad for mentioning it, but this could be even better if it supported sponsorblock and chapters, both added as chapters to the player. But I love this extension already!
Goes back from 1080p to 360p after one video in airplay mode
And doesn’t go back to 1080p at all (even when testing with the best quality option), unless I go back and hit the update / refresh button in in safari OR hitting the video quality button again so that it refreshes the video. Kinda annoying to do this to every video tho! Hopefully a new update fixes this!
Improved YouTube experience but...
I'd like to see chapters in the timeline, if possible. I'd like to see time changable option for the skip buttons. And, I'd like to see a 4K option for the resolution.
Furthermore, I also noticed that the volume occasionally goes down to 50%, after I set it higher. And lastly, the rewind button in full-screen mode is not working. Thanks for a good extension that hopefully will improve even more!
Pro tip
One workaround for the frequent crashes, if you wanna resume a video that vinegar has crashed, is to go to "share" and copy the link with the time stamp checkbox checked so you have the number of seconds as part of the link, and then paste it back and reload the video at that moment.
just great
i have no complaint , it's just great. you'll love it too.
Love it but can be improved
Great extension for Safari, although i miss some of the functions from the original youtube player, would love to be able to double press the screen for full screen, and be able to hide the quality settings etc at the top of the screen
