Description

Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag.

It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and allows videos to play in the background when set to audio-only quality.

Note: The phrase 'can read and alter webpages' in the permissions section is just an unfortunate choice of words. Vinegar needs access to the webpage to find the YouTube player and replace it. It's not doing anything creepy!

(Also, do check out Vinegar's companion app, Baking Soda. It's essentially a less powerful version of Vinegar, but it works on all websites except YouTube.)

Used for years and worked perfectly. Now getting adverts on videos. Update needed?

Kenco Makes An Unwanted Entrace

Up until very recently (a few days ago), I was not getting any adverts whatsoever on either of my devices. Now I am getting generic adverts targeted by location and video on Safari when on my iPad. This does not affect my iPhone. I do not use VPNs, my Private Relay has been turned off, and I am on the latest software update. What gives?

Does the job

Perfectly does what I need it to. Ad-blockers have those momentary black screens and then the video starts again, this just runs smoothly. My only issue is it completely removes videos from appearing in my history which would be nice if you could have an option to turn that off since now my recommended page is just full of the same videos.

No longer works

No longer works, YouTube seemed to have blocked video playback when vinegar is active. Video screen remains black and buffers forever.

Don’t waste your money! Does not work.

Does not work! Installation as per instructions but does not work. A waste of money and a scam! Be aware.

Excellent fix.

A great app that solves an issue that I am surprised Apple hadn’t implemented into Safari properly. Only thing I would request, if it possible that is. An option to still allow a ad maybe at the start of the video? Least then I can still support a favourite YouTuber without having to pay the ridiculous monthly fee YouTube wants or sit through a barrage of ads on the YouTube app. Still 5 star app though easily recommended.
