## Vinegar Description
Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag.

It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and allows videos to play in the background when set to audio-only quality.

Note: The phrase 'can read and alter webpages' in the permissions section is just an unfortunate choice of words. Vinegar needs access to the webpage to find the YouTube player and replace it. It's not doing anything creepy!

(Also, do check out Vinegar's companion app, Baking Soda. It's essentially a less powerful version of Vinegar, but it works on all websites except YouTube.)

Finally, I can see YouTube subtitles in Safari (Fullscreen/PiP).

*Not sure if this is possible with a third party app, but my only wish would be more subtitle controls:
1. The ability to disable the fade-in effect for subtitles. Most of the dramas on youtube, their subtitles are poorly timed. They just popup and disappear in a blink. And with the fade-in effect, it makes it worse.
2. It would also be great to be able to offset subtitles or add a 1-second tail or more. The less the subtitle gaps the better, it gives people ample amount of time to completely read them. 

I hope this is possible with Vinegar. 🙏

### ***** "Was hoping for an Audio Only option but the app does what it says"
I was hoping this app would provide a way to play videos in the background like Android phones do where the phone screen times out and just the audio plays or where you can swipe up and send Safari into the floating island and have the audio only play there but so far I can’t play audio in the background this way, just picture-in-picture mode like the app. A suggestion for the developer to make this app really special would be to allow users to swipe up and play video audio only in the floating dynamic island. YouTube ads are blocked like the app description says as of the time of my review.

### ***** "PnP and playing background broken!"
Oh no! This isn't related to the latest release of Vinegar I think. 

YouTube just did something and PnP isn't working. Can't play videos as background music anymore. This literally just started happening today 2/3/25. 

I updated Vinegar to the latest version and restarted Safari but the broken behavior is persisting. 

Dear developer, if you can fix it you need cash. Add a voluntary subscription or something if possible. This extension has worked for so many years you should be rewarded for maintaining it.

For reference, I also use AdGuard Pro, StopTheMadness Pro, Hush, NextDNS, and Userscripts. I have tried messing with my iPhone’s subtitle settings, alternating between Vinegar and Extract, messing with settings on the other apps I use, making absolutely sure that the app is updated, and restarting my phone, but I still cannot get subtitles to appear on YouTube videos that I know have them. The additional options that are supposed to appear at the top (video quality, loop, replay) also do not appear. It’s possible that I am overblocking with my other extensions, but I’m not sure how that would affect a video player’s ability to show subtitles. Since showing subtitles while still being able to watch videos in fullscreen is one of my main reasons for using this app, it makes me disappointed to see it failing to do that.

### **--- "Quality and Stuttering Issues"
For around a month now, videos playing PiP in the background in Auto quality will start to have a stutter effect, stopping briefly then resuming, every 10 seconds or so. More recently, after setting quality to Best to avoid this, the in-video toolbar will either show “Loading…” or “Vinegar Off” as the video quality, and the stuttering effect is back again.

### ***** "Best Ad Block + Audio Only for IOS"
I don’t normally write reviews but when something just works and does what’s advertised, credit is due.

I use firefox + ublock on all my desktops but I wasn’t sure what to do with IOS. Vinegar + Baking Soda gave me the features I wanted, with ad block. Deleted the YouTube app and added the youtube homepage to my home screen in safari. Works great. No ads, plus I can make podcasts audio only so I can multitask.

We love to see it.

### ****- "Can't reveal subtitles and "show tools" isn't working"
December 28 2024
Update : I switched back to Vingar instead of Extract, and everything is working almost normally. Video titles are visible, as are the tools and subtitles. However, the subtitles are oddly positioned in the bottom left corner.

Issue : YouTube keeps playing videos at 360p, without the option to choose video quality or enable subtitles. I also noticed that the first line of video titles disappears.

I’ve had this extension for a while, I bought it originally for my iPhone and works wonders! I recently purchased a matchbook pro and I constantly seem to be having problems with it. When I play YouTube videos it constantly stops playing videos and I can’t play them, I would have to refresh the page. I would also get on the top left corner of the video (Vinegar Off) message something about YouTube turned it off and possibly needing VPN to fix this issue? not sure what is going on.

### ***** "Great with only some slight annoyances"
Vinegar works great and provides a great alternative to YouTube’s absolutely insane and consumer unfriendly premium prices. The only real complaint I have with Vinegar is that if a video is buffering you often times cannot change the quality until the video loads which can sometimes cause a limbo state if your connection is poor at the time.
