Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag.
It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and allows videos to play in the background when set to audio-only quality.
Note: The phrase 'can read and alter webpages' in the permissions section is just an unfortunate choice of words. Vinegar needs access to the webpage to find the YouTube player and replace it. It's not doing anything creepy!
(Also, do check out Vinegar's companion app, Baking Soda. It's essentially a less powerful version of Vinegar, but it works on all websites except YouTube.)

Is Vinegar legit?
🤔 The Vinegar app's quality is mixed. Some users are satisfied, while others report issues. Consider reading individual reviews for more context.
Thanks for making this incredible extension and offering it as a lifetime subscription. There're still some minor bugs like not auto play next video, or lag, but I believe it's just temporary due to YT update recently and you can solve them all and make it better.
History YouTube does not appear in item
When I watch YouTube on safari, the watched videos are not in the HISTORY
Audio Volume Decreases to 50% randomly using Extract
Using Extract, audio randomly decreases volume to 50% when in background. And frequently the page must be force reloaded through the Safari URL bar to work.
Latest version no longer functions
I’m not sure what’s going on since support hasn’t replied to my inquiry but this latest update no longer functions fully. Buyer beware.
Can't reveal subtitles and "show tools" isn't working
December 28 2024
Update : I switched back to Vingar instead of Extract, and everything is working almost normally. Video titles are visible, as are the tools and subtitles. However, the subtitles are oddly positioned in the bottom left corner.
Issue : YouTube keeps playing videos at 360p, without the option to choose video quality or enable subtitles. I also noticed that the first line of video titles disappears.

Been great until..
I’ve had this extension for a while, I bought it originally for my iPhone and works wonders! I recently purchased a matchbook pro and I constantly seem to be having problems with it. When I play YouTube videos it constantly stops playing videos and I can’t play them, I would have to refresh the page. I would also get on the top left corner of the video (Vinegar Off) message something about YouTube turned it off and possibly needing VPN to fix this issue? not sure what is going on.
Great with only some slight annoyances
Vinegar works great and provides a great alternative to YouTube’s absolutely insane and consumer unfriendly premium prices. The only real complaint I have with Vinegar is that if a video is buffering you often times cannot change the quality until the video loads which can sometimes cause a limbo state if your connection is poor at the time.
Issues since the start of December
I’ve been using Vinegar for a while, it’s honestly one of my favorites extensions for YT but as of late the video player has been constantly crashing. If the video is over 5 minutes long the video player will crash around the 3 to 4 minute range. I never had this problem before and I find it really annoying to deal with. I’m waiting for an update before I start using this extension again.
Sometimes has issues, generally excellent
Aside from some issues like some videos playing without controls, or some videos playing only audio but no video (which are frequently solved by simply reloading the page), this is an excellent extension. As someone who despises advertising AND the javascript-infested pile of garbage the modern Internet has become, using this extension goes an extremely long way towards making YouTube usable again. Thank you for creating this!
