Best iPad software for watching movies and serials!
I moved to VLC Streamer from AirPlayit because the latter didn't implement subtitle support. Thus, I'll compare the two. AirPlayit wins in terms of design and accessibility - it's a pleasure to use. Meanwhile, VLC Streamer looks like an upscaled iPhone version on my iPad. Its navigation menus look outdated and deprived of developers' attention. Although they're not a pleasure to use, they serve their purpose well, even provide more functionality than AirPlayit - the latter wants you to define which folders you're going to stream videos from from your computer, while VLC Streamer lets you select those on-the-fly, as you can browse your whole hard drive with it. VLC Streamer supports subtitles very well, although I'm yet to find a way to turn them off when I don't need them. In this app you can also manually control the stream quality, up to 720p. It's a shame I can't stream full HD, but while watching movies on your iPad, maybe that's indeed not needed... And yes, AirPlayit's quality is just as good, though it decides on that by itself based on you network speed. Oh, and VLC Streamer lets you download videos onto your iDevice too, and that's a handy feature. Note: it burns subtitles in. There's good and bad sides to that. Keep in mind that this app costs about 3 dollars, while AirPlayit is free. AirPlayit is pretty, with enough features to satisfy most users. Note that the interface is non-retina (stream can be up to 720p from my experience). I would advise to only get VLC Streamer if you need subtitle support. There's really not much more to it. It is indeed remarkable streaming software, but seeing as there are free alternatives out there, you will want to consider twice before buying. Which I don't regret, but I would rather consider this review as a note to the devs - improve the design, and try to decrease the load times please - sometimes I have to wait for up to a minute before it buffers. Not much, but others manage it faster.
Now just crashes on open, nothing I can do, reinstalling didn’t work.
Need to be able to adjust font size
I’ve been waiting 2-3 hours already to convert the videos on my laptop so I can play them on my iPad.
This vlc is inscrutable on the ipad. I see none of the menus shown in the windows version. I cannot open files if i want to, unless the playvlc comes up for some for some reason i cannot figure out.
This is the best streaming app in terms of functionality I’ve found on iPhone. GoodPlayer, “real” VLC, etc have interesting features and potentially easier setup but get bogged down with weird buffering problems, or bizarre interface choices. VLC streamer works way more often than others and it has great interface customization Search can be a bit iffy if your library gets large, but the tagging system is solid. Would love to see search work with larger libraries (or for the keyboard to dismiss reliably) but again it’s a trivial problem. The need to preprocess videos is a small price for them to reliably work on the phone and the access control via a simple password is helpful. Bottom line: it works!
App does not work as a standalone iOS VLC app. It requires a pc/mac host to function. Not even close to feature dense as the real free to download open source and buggy vlc player currently on the store.
I rarely spring for the pro version of any free app, even when cheap, but this one is totally deserving and worth it.
I have a 1GB small 5port switch connected to a Ubiquity Unifi Pro access points. I have streamed 3 large movie files and works without a hiccup. Please note when I was using my WAN modem with built In WiFi provided by my ISP, it would be very inconsistent and to many crashes. It was once I invested in a unifi WiFi, that was life changing. I will try with other video formats and stress test it.
