I uploaded a fairly simple conversation between two people. Whisper divided this up into 4 different speakers, labeled a bunch of the text “unknown speaker,” switched speakers halfway through sentences frequently, and got a lot of the words wrong. The audio is clear and easy to understand. I was using one of the largest, slowest, and “most accurate” of their many transcription bots, so I’m surprised by how inaccurate it was. I’m looking for something that is simple to use and accurate. This is the opposite—far too many options, far too complicated to set up, and it creates documents that then take a long time to fix. -- HeyItsGogi, 2025-05-09 ### ***** "I love this!!! I have used this Mac version app for years, and ALL English voice sound tracks I have encountered on YouTube and pod casts have easily and accurately been transcribed to text. Even industrial noise, wind noise, and background music usually does not obscure an accurate transcript of the spoken message. If I need a transcript of a phone call, I confirm it is ok with the parties involved, and put the app to recording on the laptop microphone and the phone on speaker phone. In this use case it gets 99% of the voice-to-text even with the speaker phone laying on the desk 1.5 feet away from the laptop microphone. Even if you are in a legal jurisdiction that forbids recording a conversation, usually there is no law against having a written transcript, which this app does just fine, just make sure any voice recording is erased after the transcript is done, just look in your documents folder. This app it does not (yet as of 4/2025) identify which speaker is speaking, ie Speaker 1, 2, 3, or male or female for example. Most YouTube videos can be played back at 1.5 to 2x speed and it still accurately transcribes the voice to text. I used it recording laptop microphone in a construction site demonstration of a building product, and it even got most of the voices in a 25 x 40 shop accurate enough to be useful for review, but it does not do well when there are two or more groups of people are engaged in conversation simultaneously. A classroom lecture with one person speaking at a time... is perfectly transcribed. This app purchase is a one time fee, as of now, and not a monthly subscription. Keep your purchase information handy, and buy it only from Apple Store, as occasionally it will loose the purchase license information on a new download & update, requiring there license to be re-input to activate the updated app. The developer has been very responsive to update or feature requests. This app just works, and is an extremely low cost, highly accurate voice-to-text app when using the largest language model pack. On YouTube videos this app will rarely “hallucinate” with repetitive phrases, which starts because I have allowed long blank non-sound recordings at the beginning, during or end of the YouTube video or pod-cast playback. I have never seen a similar problem of repetitive word hallucinations when recording a round table discussion or class lecture. -- over-fees, 2025-05-02 ### **--- "Not quite there" I don’t like to give low reviews and will update this when it improves, but the app stumbles badly with longer transcriptions and does not retain the recordings, so you can’t retrieve them and reprocess via another means. My transcription came back in three languages and was missing large segments of the content. However, when I tried the local model, it didn’t seem nearly as accurate compared to running it on my Mac—which is understandable. My primary use case is being able to dictate an email and have it checked for spelling, grammar, and sentence structure—and that’s about it. At the moment, I don’t see a compelling reason to use this app over ChatGPT. With ChatGPT, I can enable voice dictation, speak into my microphone, and get a clean, polished output that I can copy and paste directly into my email or chat client—all for free. It’s kind of like a feature-limited version of Descript. I purchased the Pro license for larger models. Even with M4 Max, it’s not as fast as cloud services, but overall works well and is more functional than the open source project. Recommended. I liked the option to combine segments by sentence, but found speaker identification needs a lot of improvement (it frequently associates one word in a sentence to another/wrong speaker or the last/first word of a sentence from the previous/next speaker). I was also a bit disappointed there is no CLI/wrapper to use it from the terminal. I was able to figure out how to filter out filler words from the transcript, but it would be nice if there was a one-click way to enable doing so. Furthermore, the app still prompts me to pay for subscriptions like the Cloud Assistant to access additional features, even though I paid for a lifetime Pro plan. So, I upgraded to “Pro” to see if it’s any better (it’s a shame there was no way to figure this out with blindly buying it). Pro allows you to identify speakers (good!), BUT even after identifying the speakers for several paragraphs, Whisper doesn’t take that information and apply it for you. You’re left manually identifying all of the speakers, which is super tedious.
