It took me a bit to get used to the interface, but this is by far one of the most useful app I’ve found for learning Spanish. I only have favorited the Spanish-English, and English-Spanish dictionaries, and I often don’t even have to switch the direction of translation, i.e., I type “hat” and even if I have it set to Spanish->English, WordRef is smart enough to bring up the dictionary listing for the word “hat” in English. If there’s a word spelling, like “tan”, that appears in both language, just one handy little button switches the direction of translation. Other valuable features are conjugation tables and appearances of the searched phrase in the WordRef forums; these appear as links below the dictionary definitions. At one time I would have said that the app could use some UX polish, it just didn’t click with me; but now that I’m used to it, I’m incredibly satisfied with it. There is no extra fluff, everything stays where you remember, there’s a Dark Mode (which is a dealbreaker otherwise), and to my memory, it has never pestered me for a rating (the in-app button for this is actually broken for me, lol), to sign up for an account, to donate…. Nothing! it’s just there on my phone as a tool, and i would mourn its loss terribly. I wish there was a way of removing the banner ad on the bottom, but thankfully I don’t ever notice them being overly flashy. If i had to choose between that and the added complexity of in app purchases, or requiring some account to sign into… I’ll choose the simplicity of the app as it stands today. 5 stars, i hope the app dev team never retires!!!
DO NOT USE! This app is a piece of trash and doesn’t work half the time
It’s giving me a different language than those that I am choosing. Please fix!!
Get’s stuck on 2 languages and have to reinstall to get back to working.
I didn’t realize how important Word Reference was to me until it somehow disappeared from my phone this morning. (I just reinstalled it.) I study Italian on Duolingo and find this app incredibly helpful hoth for finding definitions and for seeing how the word is used with the examples it gives. I can easily switch from English-Italian to Italian-English, and I have many other language dictionaries at my fingertips. It is also my go-to for English, whether I need a definition or a synonym. Word Reference is the best overall dictionary app I have found. I can’t live without it! Thanks to the developers for doing such a great job.
This app is truly exceptional, and an excellent tool for beginners through advanced students. The creators understand the nuances of language (I can only speak to Italian), offer almost all the possible uses, and providing a complete conjugation of the verbs is also extremely useful. Well done!
I love Word Reference as a platform, but their app is a bit lacking. TL;DR - they need to add a share feature and the ability to navigate back and forth between word listings and related forum links. There's no working "back" button to use when you click on a forum link from a word listing and want to return to the listing - you need to search for the word again and scroll back down to the bottom of the listing. It's tedious and clunky. There's also no "share" option to send word listings or forum posts. The only way I've found to do this is to use a web browser instead. For quickly translating a word the Word Reference app is fine, and their depth of technical terms and specialized vocabulary for translation is unmatched in my experience. But any time I want to read multiple forum listings for a word, or share anything with someone else I just use my web browser instead, which totally defeats the purpose of having the app.
I’ve been using this app for years and it is my go-to for translations. One complaint though. If I want to “star” a word, it’s hard to tell if it’s starred or not because when you hit the star, it turns yellow and is barely discernible. Could you please make it red or something more distinct? Thank you!
I have used this app for many years. Accurate, thorough, multiple definitions. It’s VERY handy.
