Es beruht auf dem Illustrierten Fachlexikon der Uhrmacherei von G.-A. Berner, das von der Schweizerischen Uhrenkammer 1961 herausgegeben wurde, dem 1995 von der Verlagsgesellschaft La Suisse Horlogère SA veröffentlichten Ergänzungsband und der von der FH im Jahr 2002 konsolidierten Version, die von vielen Kennerinnen und Kennern auch heute noch «Fachlexikon Berner» genannt wird. Da sich die Welt im Allgemeinen und die Uhrenindustrie im Besonderen laufend weiterentwickeln, ist diese umfassende Überarbeitung unumgänglich geworden. So hat ein Fachkollegium 4'800 Begriffe und 950 Illustrationen überprüft, um anschliessend über ihren Beibehalt, ihre Änderung oder ihre Löschung zu entscheiden. Gleichzeitig sind 470 neue Stichwörter hinzugekommen. Die Fachleute waren bestrebt, nur Begriffe beizubehalten oder aufzunehmen, die in einem direkten Zusammenhang mit der Uhrenindustrie stehen, um aus diesem Lexikon ein einzigartiges, vollständig der Branche gewidmetes Werk zu machen. In der Uhrenindustrie werden sehr häufig spezifische Begriffe verwendet, die nur Eingeweihten geläufig sind, weshalb sie unbedingt allen Interessierten zugänglich gemacht werden müssen.
