Play as the commander of an emergency response team after a disaster at a secret lab, hidden deep in the arctic region. Your task is to cover up and maximize profits for the Xenowerk corporation, or to save the world, depending on whom you ask...

EXPLORE
Deploy squads on expeditions into the infected zone. Explore a ferocious landscape scattered with remnants of Xenowerk's absurd research facilities. Use skills, traits and mutations to mitigate the dangers, horrors and mishaps during your journeys. 

Push your operatives to the limit, not to waste any precious time. Explore jungles, swamps, laboratories, shelters and factories. Scavenge for valuable resources. Carry out various missions. Secure strategic safe zones. Find and rescue M.I.A. operatives.

FIGHT
Control your squad in real-time combat against hordes of mutants. Use operative skills and mutations, such as Frag Grenade, Bait & Trap, Adrenaline, Pyrokinesis and much more, to skew the odds in your favor. Activate Tactical Pause at any time to give more detailed orders.

MANAGE
Recruit and evolve Marines, Rangers and Scientists as your operatives. But choose wisely, some may obtain dubious traits or mutations.

Spend gathered resources to enhance your base of operations; Barracks, Recruitment, Field hospital, Armory, etc. Spend earnings on treatments, upgrades and recruitment.

Cater for the whims of the Xenowerk Management to keep getting funded. Earn some extra cash-under-the-table by selling off resources on the Black Market. Or maybe try to save the world...

Even though I find this game to be excellent. The combat is fun and the controls feel natural. I think the story, the faction balancing and such is superb. There is little to be desired in terms of world-building, gameplay, missions and story. Personally, I hardly ever read the stories of video-games, but this story is quite interesting. So it is quite enjoyable. 

////As a quick side-note before the critique of the actual gameplay. I almost didn't download this game, I found it after playing space marshals and was looking at pixelbite here on the app-store. The issue was that it was free, for me, it's a warning sign, I hate the freemium system and it is horrible. I did however finally see the first line of the description about buying the full game. But perhaps it is better to have the game with an original pricetag but offer a refund if the player doesn't enjoy it or something?////

I only wish, deeply, that items/loot would be a thing. I don't like the very linear level up system that is currently in place. I would have preferred options. A borderlands loot system would have been great. Currently new weapons only feature upgrades. So you're marine class will have an assault rifle rank 1, at level 2 you can pay to upgrade to assault rifle rank 2.

A lot can be improved in the same category regarding building upgrades. It's just linear and it feels boring, it's essentially just to upgrade when you've progressed to the point that the developers had it in mind. Again, I want options. Perhaps each upgrade comes with 3 perks and you can only pick one. 

And the same can, again, be said for the characters in your party. When they level up, you don't have a choice, it's just to accept whichever "mutation" the character receives as they level up.

The game seems to have been made with the original thought that there would be a lot of player driven choices. But perhaps due to time constraints they had to scrap a lot of it for this game. One of the big time-sinks when making a game is balancing, and more player options means more balancing. But for me, just the option to change gear on characters would have been amazing, or the small choice of which perk to choose when you level up or upgrade.

Hopefully, it will all be a reality in Xenowerk tactics 2, if it will get released.

I feel this game just barely deserves an 8/10. The 5-star system is quite trash since people give 5s to what they like and 1s to what they dislike. So since I like it I give it an appstore
