Octopus on iPhone or Apple Watch simplifies the way you ride transport and shop in Hong Kong. Breeze through turnstiles or pay at retail outlets just by tapping your iPhone or Apple Watch on Octopus readers. No need to open an app or wake your device. Check your balance and skip queues by topping up using your favourite credit / debit card.

It is easy to get an Octopus before or after you arrive in Hong Kong. If you have an iPhone X or later, or Apple Watch Series 3 or later, simply download the Octopus App for Tourists to add a new Octopus.  It is a breeze to check your balance and top up using your favourite credit card / debit card. If you already have a physical Octopus card, you can transfer it to your iPhone or Apple Watch easily.

App was clean and easy to use. They charge around 5-6% FX conversion fee as opposed to the normal 2-3%. Not as bad as some of the other reviewers will have you believe but not that great either.

I have a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. The app forces you to use anything but HKD and forces you to pay a crazy transaction fee. I double checked the exchange rate. They earn a cut above the exchange rate. Suica in Japan is better and tourist friendly. HK is becoming hostile to visitors.

They charge you in your own currency and use an exorbitant foreign exchange rate. I can get HK dollars at the spot rate through a credit card or even a prepaid card. One can’t use the normal octopus card without a HK booking address. They also charge a 50hkd fee to use the card. When you refund it, they will take some of the FX difference away from you again no less. A scam. Suica in Japan is how it should work - no fee and they let you use any card.

Incredibly frustrating app. Sometimes my card to top up works, other times it is denied. I have 3 different credit cards. It is the same for all of them. I spoke with each bank and it is on the merchant end. For example today I topped up with my Mastercard and then to test it, and hour later I tried again and the card was denied.   Better to get the physical card and go through the hassle of topping up with cash at the convenience store or MTR!!!!

Unusable. You can’t top it up regardless of what this app or website says. You can’t top it up via the app, it gives you a service error. You can’t top it up via apple wallet either, even though they say that’s how you do it. Buy a physical card and take out cash, I’m not the only one with these problems, they’re all over the internet. Save yourself the hassle and headache and just go to a bank or atm

works great, i just added it to apple wallet and use tap everywhere. the only downside is that u have to have hong kong issued credit card to be able to top up in HKD. i have Wise card with HKD but i cannot use it to top up. as result, i’m using Apple Pay with canadian card and top up in CAD and loosing money on exchange fee.
