The Music Effect AudioUnit / Audiobus effect plugin of AudioLayer let you record multi-samples semi automatically directly inside your preferred host and instantly create an Instrument with the help of several Auto mapping options available. This includes file name based mapping of key ranges and velocities and automatic pitch detection. SFZ is broken
After the update I no longer can import SFZ as I used to do before. Now when I import, the first layer has one sample and the last has 220 samples and all layers inbetween are empty. I use drum instrument with round robin and 4 samples per layer. It worked before.
In addition, I really cannot delete instrument, I cannot import samples into the layer manually without the app doing its shenanigans which I am unable to edit later. It has been horrible to use if you try anything more complex.
Sfz import is great!
Stream from disk, huge libraries are working nice. would be nice to have multioutput auv3, so each zone in drumkit to different out.

It just keeps getting better and better at making “instruments”. Best in Class.
Over the course of several years, AudioLayer has adding import capabilities for EXS24, SFX and *now* SF2 soundfonts. And once you import these collections of samples you can continue to edit them and make even more complex and amazing instruments.
Storage works on IOS device, iCloud, or external storage and you’ll probably want to build a massive collection.
Importing samples from anywhere and importing them into AudioLayer is so easy and powerful: either by filename conventions, root pitches or sequenced.
There’s a nice rack of FX functions to add and lot’s of control over layers, zones and such.
And now AudioLayer shares instruments bi-directionally with the KARO sample based Xinematix app so that’s yet another way to pull in samples for instrument and sound design purposes.
It’s the most powerful auto-sampler and instrument builder on IOS.

Nice Effects
Saves samples locally to phone or load from iCloud
Good if you play one instrument at a time (like a bottom keyboard piano) and you have plenty of time to change sounds using the menu list.
I use Audiolayer to play my 200mb piano exes multisample. Works nicely!
The Bad:
Does not receive program changes
Limited Controller Support
Cannot quickly change from piano to saw and tweak filter cutoff or effects in real-time
I use a 500mb soundfont and an iOS sf2 player for all my single/ top keyboard dynamic sounds…
This app is one step away from a being a classic multisample performance instrument.
The best on iOS… let’s make it better
This is the closest thing to a kontakt-type sample player for iOS because it has multi-layer and round robin support. What would make it even better are the following: a purge unused function, multi-out support, batch editing for multiple zones, and macro (customizable gui?) support. Obviously, these are just suggestions and I can get what I need out of it as-is for the most part. Hopefully the developer will continue to develop this great tool!
Missing Program Change!
The sampler works great, and I love the EXS24 importing. BUT I can’t use the app with my live performance setup because I can’t switch instruments via MIDI program change messages. This is an essential function which I hope the author adds in a future update.
